Just heard from Shaq;Wash was a close 2nd to Cal earlier;really likes Tosh Lupoi, academics;best friend James Sample is there. It's done.

Baseball was another big factor for UW, Sark was willing to allow him to miss some spring ball, family appreciated the flexibility

@bclose32 Not UW baseball, family is hopeful of getting drafted and doing minor league baseball in the spring, football in the fall

Who is the defensive backs coach at UW? I can understand defensive line recruits who follow TOsh up to Seattle, but recruits from other positions who wont be working with Tosh, I dont get that as much.
Its unfortunate that Shaq is going to UW. I feel like the terrorists are winning here. If he went anyhwere else, Id feel happier. But for the unprofessional and unethical Tosh/Sark to succeed here, it is frustrating

To a lot of these kids...
…choosing a school that can offers a black uniform strictly because it’s black is a rational decision.
They are attracted to shiny things.
The only thing I am going to give the kid credit for doing is stopping the dicking around and announcing today as opposed to making us wait.
I suppose the other shoe to drop will be Payton. But then it should be done.
There will always be others to chase after in the coming years. Contrary to his own belief in his ability, he’s not the only 5-star recruit to ever walk the face of the earth…

I’m proud of the men who are coming to Cal next year and I’m gonna root for my bears just as hard as I always do. I agree that we should all hate on washington as much as possible, but I’m focusing more on the guys we have coming to Cal and what we can achieve with the group we got. This makes me sad...
Sad that I’ve spent time investing time in an eighteen year old kid. I should be better than that. Best of luck to Shaq. Sad that the nasty business of college football means that a guy I used to think was a great Bear, Tosh, is just another mercenary. Sad that college football is about evaluating the meat market via stars and 40 times, versus getting degrees. I’ll check the list of commits on Wednesday, make comments as usual, but something changed during these last two weeks. And I’m not sure if I like it.
Lawrence Ross
I think it's just this year.
In the end, Tedford made 2 solid position coach hires. I hoped that they could save what could have been, but it was too late to do that.
To paraphrase the old Lion’s QB: We didn’t lose this, we just ran out of time. After Wednesday, the clock starts on the 2013 class. The playing field is back to even. But this team, we have the wise old men running our recruiting efforts from here forward.

Some Thoughts
I’m a junior transfer and this is my first year at Cal. I haven’t been a fan my whole life, unlike many of you. That being said, there was nothing that could stop me from being a lifelong fan from the moment I went to my first Cal football game. Anyways, this being the case, my hatred of Stanford isn’t quite on par with many of you (I’m sure it will quickly get there if we lose to them next year).
Let me tell you something though, this whole Tosh debacle has instilled a hate for Washington that I’ve never quite had for any sports team before. I guess I’ve never quite cared for a sports team as much as the Bears though. I can proudly say they’re my team, and mean it. Anyhow, November 2nd is personal. It’s personal for me, it’s personal for the players on the team, and I hope it’s personal for you guys also. If there’s one game this year I hope we win, it’s that one. Honestly, that one will hurt the most if we lose it, but of course it will be the sweetest victory if we come out on top.
November 2nd, I hope to see you all there, LOUD and proud. I know I will be. Go Bears!

Some speculation
The problem is when Tosh left, he was given ample fuel to negative recruit against Cal. Bullet points that are very key, like:
1) The University doesn’t support its football program, if they did, I would be there
2) Tedford is going to get fired, I know, I worked there.
3) Lupoi started coaching defense at around the same age as Jerry Sandusky, and we know how that will turn out…
If only things could be that karmic…

No doom for me
We’ve seen it coming awhile now and I can’t fault a kid for picking a school he thinks is best for him.
That being said, I wish he went anywhere but UW for their unethical actions. Oh well—you don’t act ethically to necessarily get results, but you do it because it’s the right thing to do.

It seems like Cal can catch a break this year in recruiting.
Three kids commit to us in the AA Army game and none of them even come to Cal.
This is like the recruiting version of the 2007 Callapse, start the season/recruiting strong only to badly fade down the stretch.
Syd was better and will end up with the better CFB career. I don’t have very nice things to say about Shaq so I just won’t say anything at all.
It’s still a good class, let’s not forget that!

Just kidding. Recruiting season officially jumped the sark for me last week. With all these will-he, won’t he, I’m announcing, I’m tweeting, I’m playing coy, I’m jumping ship ridiculousness, I took a step back, remembered these are 17/18 year olds we’re talking about and I’m just having a good time with it now, waiting to see who the True Golden Bears are now. Sure, there are high-level problems facing our team – administrative, structural, strategery, etc. – but nothing we can do about those in the next couple of days before signing day.
Let the cards fall where they may this year, and let’s see what we can do to prevent this shi*storm next year and focus on the things we need to do to get us to the ever-elusive Rose Bowl. Oh, and the Bear will never quit, the Bear will never die. Go Bears.

I hope they start him next year so Keenan Allen can make him look like a fool. Now that he’s UW, I have no reason to wish him well.
From an IM chat I'm having with a friend
we should be talking about all of them [ the recruits we have], yet instead, we are chatting about the guys going elsewhere
I believe that this will be the vent thread for the next hour or so...
But after this initial deal, we`ll be pulling harder than ever for the guys we have now who WANT to be Bears.

When AA committed to Oregon yesterday, I don`t think many of us were fazed really. Personally, I said “oh, okay then” and went about my day. i agree tho re Shaq.
This is exactly why i don’t really follow recruiting… it’s just so gross.
yeah, i dont wish anything bad for Shaq personally too.
That kid seems to be easily influenced by the surroundings, and constantly changing his minds or doubting his decisions, so I really hope Cal has a great season and that Shaq regrets not coming to Cal and having a great few years with his “buddies.”
If it makes you feel any better another 7 win season and Sark will be on the hot seat.
I think 7 wins is a pretty reasonable projection for them next year too.

I know a lot of blues are flustered. The biggest sting is the rare 5* guys with proximity to Cal, not that we needed a 6’11" DE or a safety. We needed OTs, QBs, CBs, and DT’s that are 5* guys.
We’ve had “the shaq’s” before, they’ve just played different positions. How much impact can a safety make anyway? We’ll be alright. Would have hurt a lot more if these guys played other positions.
I suppose the Hoff is gone, too?

We do need a safety. It’s also not the fact of one guy, it’s the potential of the amazing class that would absolutely have been a huge difference maker, that is now just a very good class that will hopefully at least enable us to keep up with the Joneses in the Pac-12.

I understand that recruiting is a really important part of college football, but it’s stuff like this that prevents me from following it with anything but the mildest of interest. The University of California, groveling at the feet of 18 year old kids to attend our school? Alumni and students getting down when a fickle high school senior changes his mind (surprise!)? It’s pathetic and more than a little bit unseemly, too.
I’ll worry about these kids when they take the field. This high school drama bullshit is too much for me to worry about.

Dirk at Cal would’ve been AWESOME.

well, DUH, dude, obviously!
Trust me, I know how painful it was, I was there for it! I’m just saying we’ll survive.

Shaq picked freaking Washington over the University of California guys!!! I can hear Tosh laughing on his way to cash his first five * bonus check. The only thing that can make the my soul feel better is if we demoralize them when they come to memorial. I want us to have their freaking number from here on out!!! Until Sark, Lupaid and company realize that all their classless scumballing brought upon them nothing, nothing!!

Update about the baseball if you refresh the post
Which makes more sense I guess. Although aren’t there minor league teams in the Bay Area?

I don’t usually follow recruiting, this was really the first year for me so I have a quick question. Is it normal for recruiting classes to turn over this fast and much?
I’m not just talking about Cal but ucla and now UW seem to just getting a lot of kids that weren’t on their radar a few weeks ago. UW I can instant but ucla? They just fired their whole coaching staff and their class is not top 10.
It is crazy to think how different Cals class is going to be come 2-1 and what it was just a couple of weeks ago.
No.
But it’s not normal for your top recruiter to desert you two weeks before NSD, call up all the recruits you brought in, tell them not to go to Cal, and badmouth and trash the program you’ve been recruiting for almost a year at every turn to the recruits and their parents.
(Probably because it’s a violation. But Tosh seems to be Man On Fire.)

Obviously I get the Cal and Tosh thing is abnormal but how do you explain uclas rise up the rankings? The only “Cal” guy that UCLA seemed to get after Tosh left was the DL recruit but everyone seemed to think that kid was going to be tough to keep before Tosh walked out the door.

Mora is doing SEC-style recruiting of jettisoning weaker Neuheisel-commits and getting his own guys. Castro from UW, Millweard from ASU, McCarthy from Cal. Add in Fuller from the East Coast, a solid DB recruiting class, and you have a top 25 class.
by Avinash Kunnath on Jan 31, 2012 1:05 AM PST up reply actions
Okay that makes sense. I think this will be the last year I follow recruiting, this stuff is like following a soap opera.

In the end, I think that this is a poor recruiting move for the Huskies because safety was not a position of need for their team. As I’ve stated before, the Huskies currently have 12 safeties on their roster including Grant Union 4-star Shaq buddy James Sample, 4-star returning starter Sean Parker and returning starter Nate Fellner. Rather than just grabbing Shaq “because they could”, the Huskies should be worrying about who is going to step in for Chris Polk next year. It looks like they will be counting on Jesse Callier to step into the role. I do understand the rationale of getting the best players available, but seriously, 13 safeties on the roster for next year, really?
I would agree with this more if CFB was similar to the NFL and you could only have 53 man rosters. However UWs all safety defense will not hurt them too much.
I do agree that they have seemed to neglect the RB position. I would also say they might struggle replacing their top two WRs but it seems like they may be raiding Cal for a few WR recruits so they will be okay there.
by SDBear on Jan 31, 2012 1:00 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
were not dead
we have kasen williams at wr who was arguably our best WR last year and we have james sampple and kevin smith who both started last year so WR is probably fine, i agree with the RB part though it’s a pretty questionable position. I also think shaq may start out at corner next year and play both that and safety. i feel bad we did this to you guys really wish we had screwed over oregon and not cal.
Commitment? Baseball?
Opps
Meant to link to Matt Tuiasosopo (there are like a 100 Tuiasosopos, but not all of them played football for UW, some signed LOI, then bolted for minor league baseball

rise or fall of tedford
If tedford doesn’t produce this year, this recruiting cycle marks the beginning of his demise. Not all his fault though; having a CA state budget and high academic standards are two large obstacles in recruiting athletes
by rileyslaststand on Jan 31, 2012 2:34 AM PST reply actions
that is exactly why Tedford should get to stay
The fact that he has Cal in the discussion for top 25 recruiting classes and maintains a winning record is pretty amazing.
Too bad about Shaq but I am over it. This year was undermined by Benedict Lupoi but still a good class. We will see what happens next year.

Did Tosh pop this kid's cherry or what?
The kid will be successful anywhere, but honestly this doesn’t make any sense from any angle. Just goes to show you, when it comes to recruiting, it’s less about selling the school/program than it is about selling yourself. I wonder if he’ll transfer when Tosh leaves for a defensive coordinator position at Colorado or Arizona in two years.
God, this one stings. To think a local kid-turned-Bear-turned-coach would screw us over so royally like this is the worst kind of depressing. And the fact that Shaq has roots here as well makes it more so. I can’t wait to boo the living hell out of these guys when they get to Berkeley.
I now understand the move of the Stanf'rd game to October
Because the 115th Big Game, this year, will be Cal-Washington.
What would be an appropriate trophy to replace the Axe?

honestly, here’s what I’m thinking…
If players are going to follow others (coaches, friends, etc.) to programs, then they’re not true leaders. A real leader goes with what they want and is decisive regardless of coach’s leaving for boats. I’m glad Cal got leaders like Kline, Okafor, Cochran, Sebastian, etc. that didn’t give a shit that Tosh left. Leaders are what’s needed to get to the Rose Bowl. Not followers, and those drinking the Tosh Kool-Aid.

I had that thought as well. It would have been really nice to see a guy like Shaq be firm in his commitment, really want to be a Bear, and rally the class around him instead of reenacting Hamlet for us. I mean, I’m sure now that he’s going to UW he’ll be all in and be a good player for them, but it would have been nice for him to stick with his commitment and the Cal family to show some leadership. I think they guys that have stayed true with us definitely have that leadership quality to them.

totally agree with this!
We have some great kids here already, and more on the way. We will be great.
Always best to build the Cal family with kids that want to be there. We all know it is a hard enough road to hoe without having second thoughts.

embracing mediocrity
at least watching Cal rugby is still thrilling…thrilling in the beat-down-no-mercy-for-the-weak sort of way that I dream someday I will witness on Saturdays. that’s why the last week or so has been so painful to watch unfold. there was a glimmer of hope. ah crap. lesson learned.
