Arik Armstead Live Announcement: Will He Choose Cal?
Arik Armstead was originally supposed to announce his commitment to Cal on January 16th (at least, all signs indicated he was going to choose the Bears) but the departure of Tosh Lupoi made him reconsider his decision. With two weeks to think about it, has he decided to go elsewhere or will he be sporting the blue and gold for the next four years? We will find out today around 3:00pm PST.
Arik Armstead, Pleasant Grove High School's towering and dominant 6-foot-8, 295-pound All-American linemen, will make his college scholarship announcement on Sunday.
He will announce at his family church - The House Christian Church - on Broadway in Sacramento. There will be prep teammates, coaches, family, friends and local media on hand, and why all the fuss? He's a unique talent, a unique kid know for his humility as much as his considerable football and basketball talents and upside. He has been on everyone's short list on national recruits and seemingly every prep All-American team across the country, including MaxPreps, Sports Illustrated, Parade and a host of others.
If Armstead commits to Cal, this could be a huge momentum boost to help the Bears close out on a strong 2012 recruiting class. Follow @sb_joedavidson for the latest updates and join us in this open thread to discuss the events as they unfold.

Beat me to it.
Here is the tweet:

There has been a lot off buzz today about Arik Arnstead putting on a Duck hat and I’m hearing there is definitely legs to the rumor as well
If this is true . . .
I find it slightly funny that UW blew up out coaching staff only to benefit their hated rival.

If Cal can't land him or Shaq...
…I would be fine as long as neither went to Washington.
Which then begs the question as to whether or not Lupoi was meant to land one of them, or if Sarkesian only wanted to wreck Cal’s class…

My bad, you're probably right.
We decided Cal was the only thing stopping us from reaching the Rose Bowl and decided to inflict as much doom as possible on you guys.

No matter what
We will have Kline to Treggs for at least 3 (or 4?) years.
Tosh (possibly) wrecked one class, but wins (and top-10 classes) will come.

agree
worst case Cal doesnt land Shaq or Arik, this is still a solid class of players with kids filling up spots up & down the position roster. Like everybody else I felt I was on Cloud 9 two weeks ago when it looked like we had both locked up and Payton & Shittu, plus others. #gobears #calgang

We also have some good LB's coming in
Not going to lie, though. Losing Shaq – a (very recent) legacy – to UW of all places would really, really suck. His brother made it to the NFL from Cal, what more is there to discuss? Fax in LOI to Berkeley. haha
(I think Thompson stays though, just a gut feeling)

Well if you want to believe rumors, there’s a lot of speculation Treggs is strongly considering UCLA.
I have no insider rumors, but the kid seems too into Cal to switch.

Thats good or bad. At least we now have a better chance to land at least one of them.
But also means we may not be able to get both to come to Cal.

Even when it was reported that they might/would go to the same school
I took it with a grain of salt.
I’m sure they did talk and all. And they probably want to play on the same team. But each person is their own man and have to determine their own future. So I figured they would make their own choice regardless.

It's only one data point
But Tosh’s BS (plus 7 coaches and a hotel conference room) couldn’t sway Arik to UW. Hopefully others see through it too.
What I don’t really get is, who friggin’ cares if Chip was honest that he might leave? I mean, he had already finished negotiating a contract with an NFL team!!! There was no way on EARTH he could plausibly argue that he wouldn’t jump ship, so of COURSE he was “honest” and said he might not be at Oregon the whole time…. but like, if the guy might bail at any time, then who cares if he’s honest about it, why would you sign up to play 4 years for a guy who’s ready to bail?

We will, thanks. By all accounts he was set to enroll at Cal the very next day until To$h bailed, and now he’s going somewhere else. So we shouldn’t be even the slightest bit annoyed about that?

Armstead is a talented kid. Has issues as a DE, but if they can settle him down, he’s the best guy they’ve had since Haloti Ngata.

Also historically
The Ducks have done really well training fairly okay but not stellar DE/DTs into some very good performance. It’ll be interesting to see what we can do with a 5-star.
If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score
No, it won’t be very interesting.

I mean, it’s “interesting” when you can mold a guy into a good player, but a 5-star talent doesn’t need to be molded. De’Anthony Thomas is just ridiculously good. Fun to watch if it’s your team, maybe, but there’s not a lot that’s incredibly “interesting” about it.
"i, for one, welcome our new atomic overlords" - GoldBlooded
by atomsareenough on Jan 29, 2012 10:38 PM PST up reply actions
I don't think that's quite right.
Thomas is special in that he’s extremely athletically gifted, but also in that he’s a smart football player who took CK’s tutelage to heart and earned his way into offensive sets other players wouldn’t have. Certainly there are some offenses around the country in which you can drop a talented player and say “run fast in that direction” and succeed (see: Most of the SEC), but this offense isn’t one of ‘em. Lache Seastrunk is an obvious recent example of a 5* talent who couldn’t/wouldn’t and ultimately didn’t pick up the offense and redshirted instead (and eventually left).
AA is also interesting in that while he’s a 5* offensive lineman, the top-rated player at that position, he’s a 4*, maybe marginal 5* at DE. So it will indeed be interesting how he develops at that position.

It will to some extent, and of COURSE everyone develops during their college careers, but with the highest rated players, they are often dominant or at least productive from the beginning.
Also it’s less interesting because he’s not going to transform your team. You guys are already one of the top teams in the country, and you’re going to still be one a top team.

Sarkisian didn't hire Lupoi for one or two recruits
I’m sure he would have loved to get them, but you hire a recruiting guru for the longer term.
Going after these high-profile recruits, with their press conferences and hat-choosing and high pressure, is always going to be a tough sell for Cal. Losing your top recruiter right in the middle of that certainly didn’t help.
At this point, I am assuming we lose the big-name guys and end up with a ho-hum class, at least in terms of rankings. The class may turn out fine, though. The high-profile hat pickers don’t make a team.
honestly
I said this before but i have always felt that armstead is going to be a mediocre DT, IF he wanted to play OT then….things will be different.
Lets GO FREDDIE T!
Why? What's your reasoning?
I’m not that upset since our d-line is probably our deepest spot. Still can’t help but feel that To$h blew this up though.
Besides what every scout says AND his football head coach… How many DTs in the NFL are 6ft 8in? AND what type of game he had in the army bowl?

We’ll take real good care of him. It’s beautiful seeing you guys hate the fuskies so much, absolutely beautiful.
"We Believe" - Rudy Fernandez
I think a lot of us are just expecting the worse at this point with all the big recruits in this class
We are resigned to the fact that this recruiting cycle became a cluster fuck and at this point are just happy if these big recruits don’t go to UW.
Not to mention I believe most Cal fans would rather have Shaq over Armstead.
If Shaq doesn’t pick Cal I believe you see a small melt down on this site.
It is amusing that Oregon just swooped in and stole this guy from Cal
…and the prevailing assumption is that this couldn’t have happened (and Chip would not have even tried) if Tosh hadn’t moved.
Cal fans, it really isn’t a big thing if you hate UW … but Duckfan, their sugar daddy, and the legion of street agents on Chipsters payroll are poking you in a very impolite manner. Hating UW doesn’t mean you have to enjoy getting raped by Oregon
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

Oregon was completely out of the picture for both Shaq and Arik until Tosh left
Tosh left and Oregon was back in it. That’s pretty clear cut
This is what makes me chuckle more than anything else. Some Oregon fans think UW did Oregon a great favor by getting Tosh out of SoCal
Well short term they have benefitted and if they get Shaq they will have greatly benefitted. Long term we will just have to wait and see.

ATTENTION ALL OREGON Recruits: You will NOT be protected from prosecution for anything, including speeding, smoking great gobs of ganja while speeding, stealing laptops, ect. All those trees have a weird effect on young people, including an unexplained , inane ability to blow the socks off the rest of the league and participate in BCS bowls year after year until your coach bolts.
ATTENTION U-Wub recruits: That’s not beef…tastes like…cute, cuddly, utterly defenseless, big brown-eyed baby seal!

It sucks when freakishly talented football players that actually live close to Cal not actually end up there.
That being said, we needed Arik the 5* LT + the hoops skillz.
It’s nice that USC isn’t getting all the kids. and that players are picking the ASUs, UWs, Cals, Stanfurds, and Oregons of the world instead of an SEC school.
I hope we get Shaq.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
Much like RB Foster, Arik wasn’t a huge need. Luckily we have had back to back good DL classes so DL isn’t a huge need this cycle.
This class desperately needed three things OL, DBs, WRs, and TEs. It looks like we were able to keep our OL recruits. TEs were a bit thin this year but it looks like we just picked up a TE from Kentucky and we still have a shot for that FSU kid.
If we don’t get Shaq, Hof, and Beaver our DB class will be a huge let down. Getting Drew is great but to lose two safeties who were committed to you, one who is a local kid whose older brother played at Cal would be a disaster. Especially when safety is such a huge need this year.
As for WR, well if we lose just Payton and keep everyone else, well no big deal. However if we lose Payton, Dozier, Walker (sounds like he is not coming to Cal, most likely ucla or UW) and Treggs? Complete disaster.
I officially dislike all the other Pac-12 schools and couldn’t care less if students were picking them or an SEC school over us.

sorry to troll but i don’t think you guys are gonna get beaver he has basically comitted to UW twice now and he has said before that he really doesn’t like cal at all because they have kept putting him as a backup option since they didnt recruit him till the bigger names went elsewhere, shaq is probably down to uw or cal so it’s possible i still don’t think he goes to oregon. payton and walker may come to uw, but i’m 90% sure you’ll keep bryce treggs and pretty sure you’ll keep dozier although less sure on that one.
and by the way
i’ve always liked cal so i’m sorry the lupoi stuff all went down the way it did you gu’s are a good team and we know how the stealing a recruiter hurts ucla just did it to us and stole a forth of our class.

Apparently Shaq has committed first to UCLA and then Oregon in the last week before UOV to UW
To me it seems like a UW/Oregon race at this point
He has committed to UCLA and Oregon? That’s odd, considering he has been committed to Cal the whole time. That’s not to say he’ll sign here necessarily, who knows. But I find it hard to believe that he has “committed” so many places in the past week.

He’s technically committed in a semi-official way, twice now, and he hasn’t de-committed, which I imagine he would need to do before he committed elsewhere, right? Is it possible to be “committed” to multiple schools at the same time?

I can only imagine this could mean he has told Sark and Chip (or their proxies)...
…that he intends to sign with their schools at one or more points during the process. Meanwhile, the only verifiable verbal commitment he has made has been to Cal, so that remains the commitment of record for now.
