What were your biggest positives from Cal's victory over Hawaii and why? What are the most encouraging signs you see from this team?

boomtho: The offense appears to have lost even less than I would have guessed, which is awesome. Webb appears to be the real deal, which makes it even greater that he was basically a gift that fell into our laps at the last minute. We have a DEEP stable of WR's ready to cause opposing defenses nightmares—Chad Hansen looks like a true WR1 and we got great contributions from folks like Veasy, Rivera, Wharton that I never would have expected. The OL held up really well and opened some nice holes for our RBs to run through.

Broader than just the offense, Matt Anderson nailed all three of his FGs, and the special teams coverage/return units played really well.

Dykes went for it on some high-leverage 4th downs, which is great! And we didn't struggle getting the plays in and snapped as we only burned one TO late in the play clock (that I remember’ maybe there was one more).

Piotr Le: Webb seemed getting comfortable with the role as the game went by. Furthermore, the offensive line was doing a good job keeping the pocket clean and the run lanes wide and sustainable enough for the run game. Also, Khalfani Muhammad was the truly explosive player we have expected him to be. He probably won’t play in the NFL due to his size; however, if Tavon Austin can be one of the highest paid WRs then… who knows?

KWBears: So much offensive speed and talent! Dykes surely reloaded for the Bear Raid. If Webb can be above average, Cal will be decent this year. If Webb can be great like Goff was, Cal will be slightly more than decent this year. I'm looking forward to lots and lots of great offensive highlights from the Bears this season. If we can develop some sort of a decent run game, that will also really open up the passing game for Webb and his receivers.

HydroTech: Biggest positive from the Hawaii game was the performance of Chad Hansen. He's clearly Cal's #1 WR. Hopefully he can continue to dominate once he goes up against the better defenses in the Pac-12. I would really like to see another young WR (Stovall or Robertson) step up and be a big-time threat opposite of Hansen.

Berkelium97: The performance by the new receiving corps was impressive. Hansen was tremendous out there and made a strong case to be the team's top receiver. The new receivers were great at downfield blocking. We've come a long way from the 2013 season where a screen pass only went for about two yards after the catch because the DBs shed our WRs' blocks so easily. I would have liked to see Robertson be more involved, but the passing game was still incredibly productive despite his limited production.

I was also impressed by some of the younger CBs. Marloshawn Franklin defended well and had some good pass breakups. Hawaii's receivers struggle to get separation and are prone to PBUs, but it was nice to see the DBs take advantage. Unfortunately, the front seven (or six, given how much nickel we'll likely play) will make the DBs' lives tougher this year unless we can generate a consistent pass rush.

LeonPowe: During the game there was a bunch of Twitter chatter that Robertson tweaked something—he was in the field for the first play, caught about a 30-yard pass out of bounds—and then didn't see him until late second half when he caught his first pass.

What were your biggest negatives from Cal's victory over Hawaii and why? What things need to be fixed?

HydroTech: My biggest concern on defense was the lack of a pass rush. I don't think any of our pass rushers got close enough to the Hawaii QB to even smell his farts. On offense, my biggest concern was that our WRs seemed to have a hard time getting good separation against the UH defenders. I was hoping to see more speed and athleticism from our young WRs.

KWBears: Cal's defense is not very disciplined and quite porous. On some of those head-shaking Hawaii TDs, Cal's defense was in all the wrong positions. And, in my opinion, for some years now, Cal's defensive players have not been good in tackling, particularly open field tackling. When playing wide-open offenses these days, poor 1-on-1 tackling is going to be very problematic.

Piotr Le: As I mentioned before: interior run defense and DE pass rush. Not much can be changed once S&C is over. What can we do? Maybe dial up blitzes more, such as A-gap blitzes on run plays or nickel blitzes on passing downs.

boomtho: Defense, defense, defense. Stop me if you've heard this before: no pressure on the QB, very little 'havoc' wreaked in the backfield on run plays, and a relatively unheralded QB finding decent success for long stretches of the game. I honestly don't know what Kaufman is supposed to do with the defense - ultimately a lot of success/failure is driven by the DL's ability to create pressure by only bringing 4 or 5, and I just don't think we have the personnel to do so. I was really hoping to see much more from Devante Wilson and the DL, but alas, Hawaii did a pretty great job on them all night. At the LB level, it's going to be really hard for us to win games if we consistently miss tackles, but again, I really doubt that gets significantly improved through the season.

I also have one more minor gripe about the number of conservative run plays we called on 3rd and intermediate, though I actually think that had we gained say 3-4 yards on many of those, Dykes would have gone for it. As it turned out we ended up either punting or kicking the FG.

Andrew G Miller: The biggest downside of last week’s game is that there’s no Cal football to watch this weekend…although I swear I remember something from the broadcast about this being the greatest opening weekend ever? Not sure what that’s all about. But yeah, I’ll add to the long list of complaints about our defense. There are plenty of excuses for the D's performance (not giving away too much of the playbook, Hawaii’s mystery offensive scheme, playing lots of 2nd and 3rd stringers, etc.), but to once again lack any semblance of a pass rush is incredibly frustrating. And wasn’t that sold on the improvement of Cal’s secondary either. Hawaii seemed to have a lot of opportunities that turned into dropped passes, but we won’t always be so lucky.

What are your feelings on the debuts of our new offensive leaders Jake Spavital and Davis Webb?

Berkelium97: I wish I hadn't seen that first quarter because I had a pretty poor first impression of both Spavital and Webb. We passed 18 times to 7 runs in the first quarter even though Muhammad was exposing the weakest point of their defense. Despite all that passing we could only consistently move the ball through the air on screens and curl routes; Webb overthrew most other passes. The offense seemed very one-dimensional. It looked like the kind of offense that can take advantage of a lowly team like Hawaii but would struggle against a tight press coverage against the athletic LBs/DBs of Washington and LSJU.

Fortunately things improved over the course of the game. The offense became more balanced while the passing game became more varied, especially in the second half. We saw some deeper throws towards the middle of the field and towards the sidelines while Webb demonstrated improved accuracy as the game went on. I'm hoping that first quarter was an intentionally very conservative design to help the new offense settle in during its first game.

boomtho: Starting with Webb, I'd say he was better than expected. He started a bit slow in the first quarter by taking a sack and missing some throws, but he really settled down in the second half. Part of what helped, I think, was focusing a bit more on screens and slants (what I would, as an amateur, consider easier throws) and moving away from the sideline and deep corner throws. Some of the slants he threw in the second half were right on the money.

On Spav's side, I did feel like the team grew much more comfortable as the game went on, so some of that is definitely a credit to him. Per the Calbears box score, Hawaii had only 2 sacks on 55+ dropbacks, so at least for one game the new-look OL scheme held up well. My one complaint about the playcalling was the run-pass balance. Webb threw 54 times and we only ran ~35 times (which may even include the sacks, not sure). Given the success Khalfani and Vic had on the ground, I would have liked to see a bit more running... though it's hard to really complain about that given the relative ease with which we moved the ball through the air in the second half.

LeonPowe: We know that one of the big complaints about Spav is his screen heavy offense, but I like it for two reasons. One, Hydrotech always talked about the chess game of running one play in the first half to set up scoring plays in the second. We saw Stovall and Muhammad get open for touchdowns (wait Muhammad, you need to catch the ball!!!) off fake screens.

Second, we have playmakers - guys who can make one move and make people miss. #BiletnikoffHansen, Stovall, Robertson, Bug - putting the ball in their hands with blockers in front will be a good thing.

Webb looked pretty good. It's hard to take over for the #1 overall NFL pick, but he showed a decent arm and size. I hope he'll spread the ball around a little more, but I'm not really worried about this side.

Ruey Yen: Bear Raid should again be fun to watch under the new leadership. His propensity to point at people asides, Davis Webb looks much more comfortable as the game progresses. I have faith that he will improve on his chemistry with the receivers, particularly the younger and more electric playmakers on the team.

Maybe I am being too optimistic here, but I felt like Spavital may be saving the more interesting plays of his playbook for future games. The Cal offense certainly didn't need to do much to beat Hawaii, but I find it to be a bit one dimensional for Webb to keep finding Chad Hansen. When Cal faces better defense, I am sure that the team will need to dig a bit deeper into the playbook.

KWBears: Spavital's offensive creativity is not quite there, at least not yet. Chad Hansen got a lot of calls. I'm not sure if that was to honor the veteran and give the newbies some time to come along, or maybe to throw-off future opponents' scouting reports for the Bears. But, at many times, Webb's short screen throws showed minimal creativity, certainly not that worthy of the Bear Raid name. Davis Webb is going to be a very good QB for us, not great like Goff, but very good. He's got an alpha demeanor on the field, which is great. He needs some time to get his timing right with his receivers, but I'm sure that will come with time.

Piotr Le: I hope to the high heavens this was the most vanilla game-plan we had. I was very concerned with the amount of screens that the WRs had to perform in the offense. Sure Hansen was able to break open one for a TD, however, once it becomes a tendency, defenses can key into them more causing the screens to possibly lose yardage. Furthermore, the reliance of Webb on Hansen is worrisome. We have a lot of athletes that can play in space yet often times the ball wasn’t going towards them. Not sure if it was due to the fact that Hansen was the 1st read on many of the plays and was open thus the volume, or Hansen was the 1st and 2nd option regardless of the scheme.

HydroTech: Spavital's offense is new and different. I really like the fast tempo, and all the passing makes it exciting to watch. Davis Webb seemed to be overthrowing his receivers on intermediate passes early on. Hopefully that was first-game nerves, and it doesn't become a regular occurrence throughout the season. I was very impressed with his arm strength though.

Did Cal's performance of Hawaii make you more optimistic, more pessimistic, or not change your opinion at all about how this season will go?

Berkelium97: I range somewhere between more pessimistic and unchanged opinion. After the first quarter I thought this was a 3-4 win team. Fortunately the team looked better as the game progressed and I think we can win 6 games, but I think 5 wins is more likely. I think we will definitely beat Colorado and Oregon State, win 2 or 3 against SDSU, Texas, Utah, and ASU, and (hopefully) win 1 against Oregon, furd, UCLA, and USC. I can definitely see 4 and would not be surprised if we get 5 or more wins, but both the offense and defense have considerable work to do to compete with the top half of the Pac-12.

boomtho: Slightly more pessimistic. I'd say the offense was like 10% better than I thought for week 1 (especially Chad Hansen!), but the defense was 20% worse than I thought it would be, so on balance, I've downgrade my mental win-total based on the results of this game. If our DL can't get penetration and our LB's can't tackle Hawaii, we're in for a long, long, long defensive season.

LeonPowe: Slightly more pessimistic, but honestly it doesn't change my personal win expectations (6) but I am scared about the defense. Any issues with the offense, it feels like a couple tweaks and we'll be there. We were spoiled with Goff, but Webb is a good QB, and our wideouts and backs and OLine will let us score a lot of points. I saw some chatter in the threads that our defense looked Buh- esque - that's definitely an exaggeration. Our secondary - especially Franklin - looks to be pretty good. But they'll be tested with the front seven being stymied by Hawaii. Their QB wasn't very good but they have a decent OLine and running backs. We should've been able to bring a little more pressure. I did see Coach Tate just laying into his linemen when I moved to the Cal sideline seats so the team knows it.

Ruey Yen: The Bears will have to outscore their opponents in shootout style games again in 2016. This first game just confirms my suspicion and initial worry that Cal is again a flawed team with plenty of defensive issues. While the optimistic part of me is hoping that some of the missed tackles and mental mistakes can be cleaned up as the season progresses, the Cal defense is probably not going to be very good...again. Offensively, Bear Raid looks to be a work in progress still - which is not unexpected given a new QB and a bunch of new players. Given how the rest of the Pac-12 North may also have issues this year, Cal can probably match the relative success of 2015. I don't want to read too much into just one game.

KWBears: I am slightly more pessimistic about the season now that the first game is under our belts. The offseason always brings so much hope and fantasies. But, reality always hits in September (August this year). Davis Webb is going to be a very serviceable rental QB for Cal this year. We have great speed at wideout and lots of potential. Our defense is atrocious. Some of those easy TDs for Hawaii were just palm-in-face moments for us fans.

Nik Jam: I knew this could be a tough year but was cautiously optimistic. Now im cautiously pessimistic. The defense looked poor but it is still early. They are "healthy" in that the starters from Training Camp are all OK, so I see this as different from 2013-2014 where the defense had to keep changing personnel and they could never develop. I hope to see improvements and adjustments against SDSU.

The offense looks fine, I can imagine some 2014 style shootouts this year. I just hope we're on the right end of most/all of them.

Piotr Le: More pessimistic, although not as much as my “HOT TAKE SELF” thought. My main issue is the complete lack of run-D in the A and B gaps, even when our LBs were in position, they failed to get-off the blocks from Hawai’i guards. Another issue was the lacklasture pass-rush from the DEs, even with 3 TFLs we weren’t generating the necessary pressure on the QB.

HydroTech: I feel more optimistic, but I think that's mostly because I had no idea what this team might look like with a new offensive coordinator, a new starting QB, and a lot of inexperienced WRs. Now, having seen the team in action against a real opponent, I can safely say that the team is not completely inept on offense and it can score some points. The question is whether it can do so on a regular basis against tougher defenses.

HEAD COACH SONNY DYKES

Opening Comment

"Just want to start off by saying thanks to the people of Sydney for coming out and supporting this event, and their hospitality all week, It's been an incredible experience for me personally, and I know it has been for our players as well. The chance to come and see Sydney, which is such a beautiful city, and have an opportunity to meet the people of Australia, I've really enjoyed meeting them and it's something I will remember forever.

I'm really proud of our players, I think they've handled themselves incredibly well this week. It took some maturity to come 14 and a half hours across the [world] and focus like they did on the task at hand which was to play well today, while at the same time we wanted to ensure they got to see the city and experience some unique things. I thought they handled it incredible well. It was good to win the ball game but clearly there are some things we need to improve on and work on, but it was a good start and I'm really proud of the young men that are up here, and it was fun to watch them play, I really enjoyed it."

On How Tough It Was To Prepare For A Football Team With Lots Of New Pieces

"It was hard. I thought Hawaii played well, they were very well coached. They kept mixing things up defensively and made some really nice adjustments in their running game and we had a hard time keeping up. Nick's a really good football coach and he knows what he's doing, and he'll get Hawaii going, I've got no doubt in my mind. They're going to have a good ball team, they've got a really good squad and I thought they played incredibly hard so hats off to their preparation. It's hard because you don't know what you're going to get - I mean you kind of think you do, but they kept mixing things up defensively and we had a hard time at times, some of our checks they showed us a bunch of different things. It took awhile for us to get adjusted."

On How Cal Played

"There always is pressure, when we sit down and watch the tape we'll be happy we won the ball game and pleased about a lot of things, but we're not satisfied with the way we ran the ball offensively, we were spotty at times, we had some big plays but didn't consistently run it the way we want to run it and then obviously defensively weren't as good against the run as we need to be. So I told the guys afterwards that's what we want to improve on.

I thought on the back end, I thought our safeties did a good job and so it was good to see those guys compete the way we did. We've got to sure up the run game a little bit, and you've got to give credit to Hawaii, they caught us in a couple of stunts, the first two drives we got out of a gap and they creased us, and we missed a couple of tackles - we've got to tackle better. Clearly we have to improve, if we don't, we'll have a hard time coming up against a very good San Diego State team, so they're we've got to run the ball a little better."

"We've got a lot of work to do. The first game of the season is always a good test to see how you handle it, and there were a lot of good things, a lot of bad things. We've got to play better but all our guys understand the next two games are going to be tough for us, San Diego State and Texas and that's before we get into the Pac-12, and we've got a lot of work to do but today was a good start."

On Hawai'i's Onside Kick On The Opening Kickoff

"I thought it was a really good call. I thought it was a heck of a play by us to get that covered first of all, and it's something that we talk about all the time and emphasize and we showed that to our players over and over again this week, but I don't think any of us anticipated anything like that right out of the box like that.

But I think it showed they came here to win the ball game. I think it's their mentality that Coach Rolovich has got and that's why they're in good hands with that program because he's got that mentality. He's not afraid to put themselves in good situations and giving them opportunities to win, and I thought it was a heck of a call and we were fortunate to make a play on it.

It just depends - I think he was trying to give his players the best chance to win and it's always good to see your players make a play like that when it catches them off guard, but the difference in the game really was turnovers. We didn't turn the ball over and we got four turnovers and we're going to win a lot of football games like that if we don't turn the ball over and we're going to win a bunch of games by turnovers, so that part I was very pleased about."

On ANZ Stadium Grass Surface

"We don't play many games on grass and we haven't practiced much on grass, we only had one practice on the surface on Tuesday because it rained, so it was a little bit soft and our guys weren't that accustomed to it at times, but I thought they adjusted and nobody complained about it or made an excuse and I know they worked really hard to get the field ready, so I thought it was a really good playing surface."

JUNIOR WIDE RECEIVER CHAD HANSEN

On His Connection With Davis Webb

"Even after the game, I had no idea how many catches I had. As soon as Davis got here in May, we've just had a connection. I think it's sort of blossomed over fall camp, us being together day in day out from 7 am to 9 pm, it really helps a quarterback and wide-receiver connection, so that sort of helped us."

SENIOR RUNNING BACK AND RETURNER KHALFANI MUHAMMAD

On Scoring The First Touchdown

"It was phenomenal, it was exciting and I was energetic about it. Our team came out and we executed our game plan and it got me to the end zone. So thanks to the whole line, our blocker scheme was perfect, and first touch down in college."

On His Kick Returns

"We emphasised a lot on special teams, special teams could be a game changer. So we've been in practice and working on it and we came out here and executed today. So I'm really proud of the guys blocking out front, opening gaps and giving me seams and I just took advantage of it."

SENIOR QUARTERBACK DAVIS WEBB

On His Performance

"It was okay - I'm glad we got the victory obviously, I'm proud of how they executed the game plan, as coach Dykes said there's a lot of things we need to improve on. All credit goes to Hawaii, they played really hard tonight.

We didn't know what they were going to do defensively and they did a good job throwing us off our grove in the first and second quarter, and that's a credit to their coaching staff. I'm just really proud of guys like Chad and Khalfani and guys like that who played their butts off tonight and I'm just excited to be here, it was a good victory tonight."

On How Cal Played Against Hawai'i

"Hawaii threw some blitz at us and I think our line did a good job sorting it out, and protecting the best they could and only gave up two sacks today out of a lot and that's a credit to Coach Jones and the line coaches, he had his players ready to go and I'm really happy with our centres, and guards and the whole line played well. There's stuff we can improve on but I'm looking forward to getting out to practice and working on it."

On His Connection With Chad Hansen

"He's my roommate on the road, and last night I told him he had three touchdowns today so he fell one short - but watching film I really felt Chad had the chance to have a big day, and he was the one who stepped up. The other guys had a few chances, but that's just how it went today and I'm looking forward to whoever steps up next week."
