Arizona is reportedly set to hire Kevin Sumlin

Are the threats of Beau Baldwin leaving Cal in 2018 finally over?

Just over one month ago, we called the coaching carousel (as it relates to the California Golden Bears) over for the season. Well, chaos wasn’t over yet and the Arizona Wildcats fired Rich Rodriguez amid some allegations of unsafe work environment and sexual harassment—the carousel picked back up with Cal OC Beau Baldwin listed as a strong candidate for the job.

Maybe we’re calling it too early again, but it looks like the carousel has stopped.

Sumlin has 10 years of experience as a head coach, starting off with a 35–17 record for the Houston Cougars. Moving up to the SEC, Sumlin spent the past six seasons with the Texas A&M Aggies, coming out of the gates strong with the phenomenon of Johnny Manziel. Despite a 51–26 record overall, Sumlin’s past four years were 7- or 8-win seasons to the displeasure of Aggie fans. Between these two schools, Sumlin is pretty consistent with a 66.7% win rate. In Tucson, Sumlin will be inheriting a Heisman hopeful in Khalil Tate and getting set in a region where he’s recruited well in the past.

Sumlin in Arizona could be a pretty dangerous situation for Cal. At least this should be the end of the chatter that Baldwin will leave Cal this year?
