Justin Wilcox reportedly still a contender for the Oregon job

Wilcox is in the mix with Kevin Sumlin and Mario Cristobal

Aaron Fentress of NBC Sports Oregon (and super plugged into the Oregon Ducks coaching search) sounded the alarm this morning. California Golden Bears head coach Justin Wilcox remains one of the top candidates for the Oregon job.

Bizarrely, loyalty might be the biggest factor in driving Oregon to seriously pursue Wilcox. After the departure of Willie Taggart, Oregon fans appear to be looking for someone they know will stick with the program and not desert them in the night. So it might turn Oregon fans away from a splashy hire like Mike Leach and put them more on the path with a home-grown Duck.

As stated in our last dozen posts on the subject, Wilcox played football at Oregon, as did his brother, as did his father. So there is a ton of home connections in play for Wilcox if Oregon did seriously consider making a run at him for the head coaching position.

Even though I feel Wilcox is unlikely to leave, Cal fans cannot rest easy. The watch is still going strong. Until Oregon finds a head coach, they’ll be refreshing the Twitters non-stop.
