But not to swim for us. However, I still think this is good news! Franklin is coming back to Berkeley to finish off her degree (which is listed in Psychology), to train, and to spend time with campus groups and typical collegiate activities.
Cal student Dora Antal scores game-tying goal & final penalty shot today to lift Hungary water polo to quarterfinal.
Dora Antal scored the two biggest goals for Hungary in the #RioGames against Australia #Rio2016 https://t.co/JGyqhml2yg
— WDTN (@WDTN) August 15, 2016
Following Hungary's overtime victory over Australia in the quarterfinals of the Olympic women's water polo tournament Monday, one of Dora Antal's teammates called her "the engine that drives the car of the team." At the end of regulation and especially in the decisive shootout, Antal proved why she deserved such praise . Antal, who will be a junior for the Bears in the fall, tied the game at 8-8 with a goal with 2:59 remaining in the fourth quarter. The match remained tied through the end of the period, which set up a shootout to determine the winner. With each team awarded five shots on goal, Hungary made its first four, while Australia made three of four. So when Antal took aim, she knew that a goal would clinch the outcome. And with a hard shot to the right side of the net, Antal sent Hungary to the next round, while Australia missed the semifinals for the first time since women's water polo became an Olympic sport in 2000. "I'm so glad we could beat this strong Australian team," said Antal, already a two-time All-American and the 2014 MPSF Newcomer of the Year for Cal. "I think we proved we are a big team and we have a really big heart. I think that was the key." Antal's Cal teammate, Anna Illes, also played in the match for Hungary. Next up will be a Wednesday meeting with the United States for the right to play in the gold-medal match.
Byeong-Hun An finishes 11th in Olympic golf tournament
although i didnt get a medal this week but im proud to be an Olympian and represent my country. it was a special week. #Rio2016 #Olympics
— Byeong Hun An (@ByeongHunAn) August 14, 2016
Recap from CalBears.com: Golden Bear Ben An, competing for South Korea, shot a 3-under-par 68 in the final round of the Olympic golf tournament to finish in a tie for 11th place, highlighting Cal's Sunday results at the 2016 Games. An completed four days of play with a 6-under-par total at the Olympic Golf Course, matching scores by Patrick Reed (USA), Bernd Wiesberger (Austria) and David Lingmerth (Sweden). An posted a pair of eagles on Sunday, including on the par-5 18th hole. "I didn't get a medal this week, but I'm proud to be an Olympian and represent my country. It was a special week," An tweeted after his round. An, who played for the Bears from 2010-11, joins both his parents as Olympians. At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, his mother won a silver medal in women's doubles and a bronze in women's singles for China, while his father took home a bronze medal in men's doubles for South Korea.
Carli Lloyd and Team USA volleyball undefeated in pool play
In women's volleyball, alum Carli Lloyd and the United States completed pool play with a perfect 5-0 record after downing China, 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19). Lloyd saw action in the first set and contributed one dig and one assist. Team USA next plays Tuesday night in the quarterfinals. "We knew China would be a tough competitor. They always are and they don't go away," Lloyd said after the match. "So you can get them backed up a bit, then they just come at you full throttle. I feel we did a really good job of just staying in it and trusting in what we do. It was a great team effort." Lloyd, the 2010 NCAA Player of the Year, added she takes much of what she learned in Berkeley with her onto the court at the international level. "Being at Cal and being in that environment, I felt like I was part of a family," Lloyd said. "That environment we created in Berkeley those four years is something that will always be with me. And I use that as an example when I go other places because those four years were phenomenal. We had a great four-year run there, and a large part was because of the environment we created."
