Avery Sebastian tears Achilles tendon, out for season, will redshirt

The Cal secondary will be put to the ultimate test as they have to go deeper into their not-so-deep depth chart.

We said all offseason that if Cal were to get through this season and make big improvements, they would have to hope the secondary could stand up. The defensive back situation is pretty bare, and they can ill-afford to lose too many players back there.

They've lost a critical member of that backline. Strong safety Avery Sebastian will miss the rest of the 2013 season, confirmed head coach Sonny Dykes in his Tuesday press conference.

As Avery played less than 25% of the season, he is eligible for a medical redshirt and will maintain his eligibility to play two more seasons at Cal.

Sebastian had already racked up 11 tackles in just over a quarter of action before he left the game due to his injury. It's been a tough month for him, as he already dealt with a concussion just under a month ago. Here's to his rest and recovery for the rest of the 2013 season and hope he comes back strong for his junior campaign in 2014.

As for the Bears, they will now turn to either Alex Logan or redshirt freshman Damariay Drew to take over as the primary starter, but expect a lot of rotation between those two and Michael Lowe.
