ESPN: Cal will interview Jake Spavital for head coaching vacancy Tuesday

The first!

Jake Spavital

Cal has an official name in their coaching search. David Lombardi of ESPN reports that offensive coordinator and interim head coach Jake Spavital will get the first known interview for the Golden Bears. Can Spavital become the permanent solution for the Bears?

Spavital did his best in his first year with the Bears to keep the Cal offense humming. Despite losing Jared Goff, Cal’s top six wide receivers and their original starting running back, the Bears produced an offense that was top 10 by both normal and advanced metrics. Cal was a bit more balanced than previous seasons as well, incorporating the run a little bit more than Tony Franklin did.

There are a lot of questions surrounding Spavital’s experience. He would be 32 years old on opening day, in 2017 and has never been a head coach on any level. On the other hand, he would come at a bargain price for the athletic department and has the support of the players and recruits.

He has been an offensive coordinator at Texas A&M for a few years, and probably got a bit of a raw deal from Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies coaching staff. He was previously the quarterbacks coach at West Virginia and a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State.

Cal fans, discuss! What do you think of Spavital getting the first interview?
