Cal coaching news: Eric Kiesau a potential offensive coordinator, Ron Gould back?

Hmm.

We have the long-circulated news that Tosh Lupoi could join up with likely Cal head coach Justin Wilcox as his potential new defensive coordinator. Who else would potentially be on a new staff?

Well, we have two more familiar names from the Jeff Tedford era: Former running backs coach Ron Gould and wide receivers coach Eric Kiesau are being named as potential targets.

Good news: Ron Gould! Ron Gould is probably the most popular Cal assistant ever, having recruited and developed an unprecedented run of NFL running backs including Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett, J.J. Arrington, Jahvid Best, Shane Vereen and C.J. Anderson. Cal would love to have Gould back as a running backs coach. Gould was relieved of his duties as the head coach of UC Davis, and is currently a free agent coach. Bringing him back in some capacity as the running backs coach would be critical.

Not so great news: Eric Kiesau. Kiesau is also a former Cal legacy coach (wide receivers coach at 2002-05 and 2011). I’d be interested in Kiesau as a wide receivers coach, but as an offensive coordinator his results are wanting. Kiesau was an offensive coordinator at Washington but generally deferred to Steve Sarkisian, and at Colorado before that, and the results weren’t great. As Fresno State’s offensive coordinator, the results were pretty lacking this season—the Bulldogs were a bad offensive team last season, and Kiesau was not retained by his old boss Jeff Tedford.

Cal fans, your thoughts on both of these names?
