As you’d expect when a head coach gets fired, the promising assistants start looking for new homes. Probably the most prominent is up-and-coming wide receivers coach and top-notch recruiter Jacob Peeler. Peeler was probably one of the coaches on staff Cal would’ve liked to keep long-term, but it sounds like he has other ideas. Peeler is lining up to be the new wide receivers coach at Ole Miss. More from Scout:
Sources confirmed to the Ole Miss Spirit Tuesday Freeze is poised to hire former Cal wide receivers coach Jacob Peeler to the same post for the Rebels. Peeler spent the previous four seasons as a member of Sonny Dykes’ Bears staff, including the last two as wide receivers coach. However, Peeler became immediately available after Dykes was dismissed as head coach a few days ago.
For those unfamiliar with Peeler’s handiwork, he was the figure most instrumental in securing Cal’s top 25 recruiting class last year, which included five star athlete Demetris Robertson, Melquise Stovall, Vic Viramontes and Jordan Duncan among others. Cal also had one of the best passing offenses in the nation for much of 2015 and 2016 thanks in large part to Peeler’s coaching.
Commitments from the 2017 class to now monitor include: Athlete Michael Onyemaobi, athlete Jeremiah Hawkins and wide receiver Taariq Johnson (who is already on campus in the process of enrolling early).
So if you’re keeping count at home, Cal now needs to find
- A head coach
- A defensive coordinator (which probably means new defensive staff at some point)
- A wide receivers coach
Cal will play Ole Miss in Berkeley this upcoming season before a return date to Oxford in 2019.
