Cal suffered another injury loss in the form of Chinedu Udeogu. The Cal backup linebacker/defensive end, slated as a backup on the fall depth chart, has missed the last two games due to injury, and has now been ruled out for the season with a lower body issue.
The California Golden Bears came into this season with a very strong starting linebacking corps. Barely a month in, that unit is beginning to have to scrape for answers.
With Cameron Goode, Tevin Paul, and Ben Hawk Schrider held out for the Ole Miss game and still questionable for incoming contests, the Bears had to turn to redshirt freshman Nick Alftin and true freshman Braxten Croteau. While Alftin did register half-a-sack and Croteau managed three tackles, the two were quickly overwhelmed when asked to handle primary scrape exchange defense against Rich Rodriguez’s scheme. That task quickly fell to Evan Weaver. I doubt these were the primary options Justin Wilcox wanted to rely on for conference play.
If Alftin and Croteau continue to get the start Friday night, expect the defense to rely heavily again on Weaver, Kuony Deng and Ashtyn Davis to try and contain Jayden Daniels and Eno Benjamin on the ground.
