Post–Week 4 bowl projections: My nightmare cometh

New, comments

At last, all sources predict some bowl-bound Bears.

Surf’s Up My almost-home.

Eight games left in the regular season and the California Golden Bears need to find two more wins to earn bowl-eligibility. Will we plummet from a 100% win rate to 12.5 or 0% win rate and fail to reach a bowl? Will we drop to 25% win rate and be one of the 6–6 teams projected to be left out of a bowl game this season?

For the first time in this season, all of the resources that I check are projecting that the Bears will go bowling. (Brett McMurphy of Stadium was very kind to us last week, but his predictions won’t come out until later today.)

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach has us heading down south to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, where we’ll face the Iowa Hawkeyes. I almost moved to San Diego a few months ago, so that would’ve been convenient. On the other hand, Kyle Bonagura thinks we’ll face the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Alamo Bowl.

Apparently we can find out if it really ain’t easy being sleazy if we match 247Sports’ prediction and play in the Las Vegas Bowl against the Wyoming Cowboys. This would be a slightly-early preview of our home-and-home series set 10 years from now.

Speaking of the Las Vegas Bowl, CBS Sports has managed to make that game even worse by calling for my worst-case bowl game—facing Jeff Tedford’s Fresno State Bulldogs. I’ve said it before, but Tedford is the coach who introduced me to Cal Football and I have no interest in seeing him as an opponent or rooting against him.
