As this crazy, stupid conference burns, somehow, the California Golden Bears are the only ones left standing.

Cal, suddenly the model of stability in a Pac-12 that’s lighting itself on fire, is the only team that stands after Week 4 with no blemishes on their record. Four games, four wins.

Here are the conference standings after Week 4. Look at this wreckage.

Pac-12 football standings, Week 4

Somehow, the three other undefeated Pac-12 teams screwed this up, each in increasingly spectacular fashion.

  • Utah, facing a USC team down two starting quarterbacks, got lit up and couldn’t finish any of their drives.
  • Arizona State, which had given up 7 points a game, saw Steven Montez savage a Sun Devils defense early and had Colorado sneak away with a victory in Tempe.
  • Washington State, somehow outdoing Cal’s spectacular 60-59 duel from a year ago, concedes FIFTY POINTS IN NINETEEN MINUTES to blow a 32 point lead to UCLA.

Thanks. All of you. Now Cal has an entire spotlight shining brightly on its back.

Cal can’t really start thinking that much about winning thePac-12—in two weeks they play Oregon at Oregon, and a loss there can fold those hopes back into oblivion. So for now, Cal just has to keep thinking of the game in front of them, because honestly, that’s all the mental bandwidth they can probably hold at this point.

The good news is that the Pac-12 has been virtually eliminated by the national media from the playoff race, so right now, Cal remains an exciting local story. And they’re super exciting! But there’s too many variables in play to think about right now. Every game ahead can easily be won or lost. Cal has won their two coin flips, but there are plenty more to come.

Time for ASU!
