Almost exactly one year ago, the Arizona Wildcats fired head coach Rich Rodriguez for his role in sexual harassment, cover-up, and a hostile work environment for one of his employees. (Our special teams coordinator and Arizona recruiting expert Charlie Ragle came our way after being forced in this environment.)
Turns out that the California Golden Bears will reportedly still be facing Rich Rod, this time as offensive coordinator of the Ole Miss Rebels, whom we’ll be playing as part of our 2019 nonconference schedule. The Ole Miss coaching carousel is actually quite familiar with Cal as their defensive coordinator next year will be Mike MacIntyre—former coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. Furthermore, they only have an open gig because the former Ole Miss offensive coordinator (Phil Longo) will be heading to the North Carolina Tar Heels (against whom we just finished a home-and-home series) for their new head coach (and sworn enemy of all Golden Bears) Mack Brown.
Rich Rod is a mastermind who brought the read-option to the world of football. Ignoring his results against the defense-deficient Dykes squads, Rich Rod and Khalil Tate had an epic battle against Cal in 2017. In double overtime, Arizona put up 511 yards on our defense, only winning after Cal failed an attempt at a two-point conversion.
