With Mike “I use a quirky schtick that’s getting old to hide the fact I’m just kind of an ass” Leach headed to the Mississippi State Bulldogs, the Washington State Cougars needed to find a new head coach.

As we watched the Tigers win the National Championship, Pullman found their lead man.

Nick Rolovich has been the head coach of the Hawaii Warriors for four seasons. Inheriting a team that went 3–10 in 2015, Rolovich led them to 7–7, 3–9, 8–6, 10–5 seasons; Hawaii plays varying numbers of games each season, so using percentages to normalize, he took over a team that won 23.1% of their games and led them to seasons winning 50.0, 25.0, 57.1, and 66.7% of their games. During his tenure, they went to the Hawaii Bowl thrice, winning twice.

This past year, they went 2–1 in the Pac-12 with a 45–38 home win over the Arizona Wildcats (in their season opener), a 31–28 home win over the Oregon State Beavers (viewed by 37 whole people on Facebook Live), and a 52–20 beatdown in the garbage city of Seattle to the Washington Huskies (probably a visceral outlash by the Huskies to losing to us on a Sunday morning the week before).

Yahoo! Sports is reporting a five-year contract of “nearly $3 million per season”, putting him at the middle of the conference and near Justin Wilcox.

A former quarterback and an offensive coach, Rolovich brought the Run and Shoot back to Hawaii and will now presumably be bringing it to Washington State and their roster designed around the passing game and the Air Raid. For a quick primer (because I don’t have time to be writing this, but we have no other writers), the Run and Shoot uses a lot of motion and requires a nigh-telepathic bond between quarterbacks and receivers as the latter must make adjustments and modifications to their routes mid-play based on the defense. The transition from Air Raid to Run and Shoot shouldn’t be too drastic.

Here’s to Rolovich being as vulnerable to Wilcox as Leach was!
