California begins the season 1-0 after defeating its Northern California neighbors UC Davis 27-13.
As expected, the turnover count for the California Golden Bears season opener against the UC Davis Aggies was high. Unfortunately for the home side, California’s much-vaunted defense was not responsible. It was California who coughed off the ball a whopping four times—two at the hands of quarterback Chase Garbers who threw an interception in the first quarter and fumbled the ball in the last.
California saw the greatest success on the ground Saturday as running backs Christopher Brown Jr. and Marcel Dancy rushed a combined 233 yards. Brown, Jr., the sophomore started, ended the day with 197 yards—a fantastic result for his first start. The last time a Golden Bear rushed for more than 100 yards in his first career start was Jahvid Best in California’s 2008 season opener against the Michigan State Spartans.
