Roundtables: Berkeley Food Final Four

Recently there was a Cal Food/Restaurant March Madness bracket. Who makes your Final 4? Who wins the championship?

thedozen: I have a weakness for Chicago style pizza and always loved Zachary’s. I also remember a fine Indian meal at Vik’s Chaat on Fourth Street. To round out the Final Four, I’ll say Chez Panisse and Albany’s Cafe Raj.

Rick Chen: Mid-tier Eureka! joins top-seeds Angeline’s Lousiana Kitchen, the Cheese Board Collective and Chez Panisse in the Final Four. Cheese Board wins the championship thanks to its popularity (lower prices!) among students and townies to maintain its blue-blood status in the Berkeley food world.

Piotr T Le: Cheeseboard, Top Dog, Thai Basil, Gregoire’s. With Cheeseboard winning it on value and variety. These are all nostalgia picks since each place is attached to strong and good memories I have during my time in Berkeley.

Rob Hwang: I’m going to get a lot of flak for my list, but this is purely just my favorites with added nostalgic value. My Final Four would include: Intermezzo, Thai Basil, Gypsy’s and Bongo Burger. My champion would have to be Gypsy’s. Honorable mention to Sufficient Grounds who had the best rotisserie chicken sandwich with house made focaccia, and would be my champion if they were still in business.
