While the Men’s Basketball has had a slew of players in the transfer portal (As we reported, Darius McNeill chose SMU yesterday), the women also lost a major player in Kianna Smith. Earlier this week, she made it official who her new team is going to be.

Cal has played Louisville a few times in the past, including in the 2013 Final Four. It would not be out of the question that a reunion could happen in post-season play or even a scheduled match.
But its not all bad news for the women. Stockton native Najé Murray will be a Cal Bear. Although she has not made an official announcement, she retweeted the embedded tweet from a reliable source.
Former SDSU sharp shooter @NajeMurray will return to her NorCal roots as she will transfer to @CalWBBall. #gemsinthegym pic.twitter.com/acTCCEqU2e

It is not an immediate trade-off since she will (presumably) have to sit out this season before playing two, but her resume is impressive. Last season, she set a SDSU record with 79 made three-pointers. In her freshmen year, she was one of the best freshmen in the entire Mountain West in overall points, three-pointers, and steals. In total, she scored 717 points in two seasons. Were it not for Cal Basketball’s (both of them) issues with retention, I’d feel really bad for the Aztecs as it really looks like she was their MVP.
Women’s Basketball is losing a lot of players this off-season and there should be legit worry about next season, but it is nice to know that there are still pieces for this team to be competitive and fun to watch in the years to come.
GO BEARS!
