Changes are coming to California Golden Blogs

Some surprising and unfortunate uncertainty makes our future unclear.

If you’ve been following Twitter yesterday or California legislative news recently, then you may have caught wind that there will be some changes.

SB Nation will have their official take on the story go live on our site at 9 a.m. PT today (and their representatives will be in the comments if you have any questions), but we wanted to share something in our own words.

In 2020, there will be some changes coming to California Golden Blogs. And unfortunately, we don’t know the full extent of these changes yet.

Due to a California law restricting the amount of work that one can do and still be labelled as an independent contractor, SB Nation will be changing their management for Californian sites. As the flagship university of the state of California, this certainly affects us.

We have been told that the vision is for this CA-wide manager to mostly allow things on California Golden Blogs to operate as they have been. Either because we’ve just been killing the game or because no one really cares about college athletics outside of us loons.

But with such big changes looming, there’s uncertainty about the future here. None, some, or all of the writers whom you know and love (or, in my case, the writer whom you read and tolerate) may choose to continue working under this new structure while none, some, or all of us may decide to hang up the keyboards.

When things become more clear, we will be as transparent as legally (and ethically and handsomely) possible.

Regardless, changes will be coming to California Golden Blogs and we wanted to say something in our own words. Thank you for reading our work for all these years and building a great community (that only gets on my nerves sometimes). We appreciate every single one of you and hope you continue the discourse on our beloved California Golden Bears. There has been an outpouring of support, love, and kind words from Cal fans and our contemporaries and real actual journalists on Twitter and it’s been so touching. Thank you for being part of this community.
