2020 athlete Casey Filkins flips from Cal to Stanford

Cal lost one of its major commits in the 2020 recruiting class in the worst possible way. Athlete Casey Filkins made the decision to flip to Stanford after receiving an official offer a few weeks ago.

It sounds like Filkins dreams of being the next Christian McCaffrey—Filkins’s favorite athlete, plus his playing style somewhat models that of McCaffrey. This was going to be a hard battle to win once the Stanford offer was extended.

This has become a recurring trend for Cal—a promising prospect commits early, and then Stanford plucks them away in the leadup to National Signing Day. Cal still does have two promising running backs in Chris Street and Damien Moore, but Street just broke his fibula last week and is done for the season and Moore injured his ankle last week, so both will be a bit banged up entering as freshman.

It’s another tough mark against an offensive staff that has struggled to recruit depth at positions of need.
