Cal Football Coaching Staff Reorganization

Changes Made Coaching Responsibilities, Especially on Offense

Per the CalBears.com announcement and press release.

Coach Wilcox:

“We have had many conversations throughout our football program about how we can get better and this is one of those ways,” Wilcox said. “While we have shown progress in many areas, we are far from satisfied and feel like we can be much better in the future.”

“I have confidence in this group of coaches to lead our student-athletes to victories on the field and make a positive impact on their lives off of it,” Wilcox said. “We are in the process of building a program at Cal that everyone can be proud of and coaching continuity is important to build and sustain success. I believe we have the right group of people in place to make that happen and these adjustments will put them in even better positions to help our student-athletes achieve their goals.”

The Changes:

Offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin will coach the team’s quarterbacks as he did in his first 13 seasons of coaching before becoming Eastern Washington’s head coach. Marques Tuiasosopo will work with the tight ends, which he previously coached at both UCLA and USC. Burl Toler III will move to wide receivers coach, the position he played at Cal and coached in his first two stints as a collegiate assistant, while Nicholas Edwards will oversee the running backs. Steve Greatwood remains the offensive line coach.

The lone change on defense is the addition of co-defensive coordinator duties for inside linebackers coach/associate head coach Peter Sirmon.

Charlie Ragle will focus exclusively on his role as the special teams coordinator after having also coached the tight ends in each of his first two campaigns with the Golden Bears.

Looks like all of the coaches, besides Coach Edwards, are moving back to their original spots. The addition of co-DC duties to Coach Sirmon signals that the increased interest in DC DeRuyter has been noted by the staff and Coach Sirmon looks to be heir apparent at DC.

For me the re-shuffling on the offensive side of the ball to spots where the coaches are most comfortable and most experienced could indicate that they are aware that the 2019 defense can be something special and can’t be wasted by inexperience. Also this confirms beyond all doubt that the 2019 season will open with OC Baldwin at the helm of the offense despite an abysmal 2018 season.
