The California Golden Bears return to the gridiron on Saturday night for their first road contest of the 2018 season. They take on the enigmatic BYU Cougars, a team that’s on average five years older than the rest of college football and has somehow only won one national title despite that very deep advantage. Missions are a tough recruiting pull for many 18-year-old non-Mormons, for whatever reason.

Cal and BYU are both 1–0 on the young season. Cal got their first win with a hard-fought slugfest against North Carolina. BYU went on the road and decisively took a win out of Arizona’s pockets. This figures to be another important slugfest in the battle for bowl eligibility. Neither team looked particularly decisive to start and a lot is uncertain. Based on what we’ve seen so far, expect a close, hard-fought battle in the trenches.
