Cal Bears at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Recap: 4 Bears earned 2nd team All-American honors

The 2017-2018 school year is officially over for Cal Athletics.

Lauren Martinez setting a new Cal record in the pole vault was one of the highlight for Cal Track and Field this past week.

This past week, 7 Cal Track and Field athletes competed in 8 events at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship from Eugene, Oregon. Reminder, for each event, only the top 24 in the country get to compete in the NCAA championship. Places 9th-16th earn 2nd team All-American honor. The top 8 earns 1st team All-American honor, while also scoring team points.

Here is how the Golden Bears fared.

In the hammer throw, junior Silviu Bocancea finished 16th with a toss of 215-0 for 2nd team All-American honor.

In the 110 meter Hurdles, senior Ashtyn Davis finished 14th with a time of 13.87 seconds. He had previously finished 9th in the 2016 NCAA Outdoor championship in this event.

In the shot put, sophomore McKay Johnson placed 17th with a 62-1.00 toss. Just ahead of him at 16th is senior Peter Simon with a toss of 62-2.25. Johnson gets All-American honorable mention while Simon gets 2nd Team All-American honors for placing in the 9th to 16th place.

Setting a new school record is Cal junior Lauren Martinez in the pole vault. She cleared the 14-1.25 to finish in a tie for 11th.

Trying to clear the next bar, Martinez aborted her starts in the first two attempt and then brought down the bar in her 3rd attempt to finish her season.

Transfer sophomore Tuomas Kaukolahti finished 18th with a jump of 50-11.5 in the triple jump. That was good for 18th and an All-American honorable mention.

Getting his 2nd All-American Honorable Mention is McKay Davis in the Discus. His toss of 175-3 was good for 18th.

Closing out the season is senior Ashley Anderson. In the triple jump, Anderson had a jump of 42-2.25 for 21st place and an All-American honorable mention.

This is how the 7 Cal Bears did in the 8 events (McKay Johnson competed in both the Shot Put and Discus).

On this upcoming Friday, I’ll attempt to access the trajectories of all of the Cal Athletics programs. Then, it’s off to the annual summer hibernation for me until the fall. Thanks for reading all school year long.
