When you live in Ohio, you get to test things sometimes before they reach the rest of the United States or even the world. To wit--

Fresh off its success with Taco Fries, Taco Bell is testing a handful of new products — including a French Toast Chalupa for its breakfast menu.

With 53 million orders sold, Taco Fries surpassed Doritos Locos Tacos at the most popular new menu item at Taco Bell, which is based in Irving, Calif., and is a division of Louisville-based Yum Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM).

And Taco Bell is at it again.

This week, the chain added the French Toast Chalupa to its mix of new items.

Nation's Restaurant News reported on Wednesday that the fast-food chain is testing the French Toast Chalupa at restaurants in Dayton for $2.49.

It's a chalupa shell made of French toast, folded in half and stuffed with scrambled eggs and bacon or sausage crumbles, served with a side of syrup, according to an email from Taco Bell.

"While we've been partial to the Naked Egg Taco, the French Toast Chalupa is its perfect foil," Regina Wu, a Taco Bell spokeswoman, wrote in an email to Business First. The carb-heavy chalupa is the antithesis of the low carb naked taco. It rolled out nationwide last month at $3.49.

The taco chain also is testing a Queso Quesarito in Birmingham, Ala., for $2.99. It consists of two tortillas, with a layer of queso sauce between them, then wrapped up like a burrito and stuffed with seasoned rice, beef, chipotle sauce and sour cream.
