Good job, James!

Original: James Looney is the sole representative for the California Golden Bears at the 2018 NFL Combine. He and the rest of the defensive linemen will be working out bright and early on Sunday morning, which will be livestreamed by the NFL. (Unless he’s decided to switch to corner or quarterback.)

Looney needs a big showing to up his draft stock. His NFL Combine profile scores him as a 5.15 (on a 10-point scale, corresponding to “[b]etter-than-average chance to make NFL roster”) and their assessment of him was less-than-rosy—particularly of his 2017 play.

Round 7/PFA

”Really disappointed by what I saw this year when I went in. I know we talked this summer about how teams would try and find a role for him because of his talent, but he just didn’t play as well. He was light last year and even lighter this year.” - NFC West Coast scout

Looney’s quickness and disruptive qualities were on full display in 2016, but he was much easier to block in 2017. He lacks the size and strength to play inside and it appears as though adding functional weight on his frame is a non-starter. Looney will likely need to improve his lean muscle mass and try to transition into a role as a base 4-3 end who might be able to reduce inside as a situational pass rusher in sub-packages.

Let’s congratulate James, discuss his performance, and share any news or posts on social that cover his Combine performance.
