For two weeks the conventional wisdom told us that Cal would be an 8 seed. But just minutes into the selection show the Bears popped up as a 7 seed in the Albany regional, across from 10 seed Virginia in Columbia, South Carolina.
If you’ve been following Cal WBB for more than a few years then you almost certainly know what Virginia means: Joanne Boyle will face the Bears. Boyle’s Cavaliers have played Gottlieb’s Bears once prior, a 2011 game in Hawaii that Cal won, 59-50.
If Cal emerges with a win they will almost certainly play 2 seed South Carolina on their home floor. The defending national champions are plenty good, with all-american A’ja Wilson leading the way. We’ll have plenty more on both Virginia and South Carolina (and North Carolina A&T) later this week.
Around the Pac-12, conference teams earned the following seeds:
2 - Oregon
3 - UCLA
4 - Stanford
6 - Oregon State
7 - Cal
7 - Arizona State
USC was one of the last 4 teams out of the tournament
Cal will have the Friday/Sunday turnaround, and CalWBBall twitter indicates a 2:00 pm tip time for Cal’s first game. The stage is set, time to dance. Go Bears!
