Demetris Robertson, Melquise Stovall among those approved for Redshirts for 2017

Good news for the Bears!

NCAA Football: California at Washington State James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

The week got off to a great start for the Bears as we learned who received redshirts for the 2017 season. Thanks to an update by the ever great CGB alumnus Trace Travers we found exactly who officially received redshirts.

Somewhat unsurprisingly superstar in waiting Demetris Robertson received a redshirt for this past season, moving his official status to redshirt sophomore. While the optimist in me would like to believe we have more than one more year of Robertson left, he is most likely to head to the NFL after this season.

Melquise Stovall also received a redshirt for last season. Stovall was infamously absent from the first few games only to make a sudden appearance against Oregon and USC before disappearing into the abyss for the remainder of the season. Stovall has the potential to be a critical piece for the Bears with the departures at running back this offseason.

Trey Turner, a bit more of a mainstay during the chicken spaghetti era, received a redshirt this past year and will retain eligibility as a redshirt junior.

Other notable names include quarterback Brandon McIlwain and punter Steven Coutts who each received redshirts due to transfer.

The speed should be on full display next fall with Stovall and Robertson figuring to see a lions share of the action on offense. Their playmaking ability will add another wrinkle into an already efficient and innovative Beau Baldwin offense.
