Insta Recap MBB: Cal survives against Santa Clara

NCAA Basketball: Legends Classic Nicole Sweet-USA TODAY Sports

The first half was a collective effort for Cal as they took a 12-point lead going into the half. They started the game on a 14-0 run, as Santa Clara struggled all half to find rhythm. Cal did not shoot well, but Juhwan Harris-Dyson brought a spark off the bench, scoring 8 points and 3 steals in 11 minutes. Andre Kelley also made an impact under the basket, also scoring 8 points. Defensively, the Bears were solid, forcing Santa Clara to make 14 turnovers. However, the Bears struggled to box out and keep Santa Clara from getting to the offensive rebounds. In a game where the top contributors struggled to score, other guys are making an impact.

In the second half, it just seemed that Santa Clara would not go away. At one point late in the second half they tied the game, but Cal found a way to build back up its lead to finish the game. Juhwan Harris-Dyson was obviously the best player on the court, making major baskets and hustle plays in the second half that helped keep Cal afloat. Andre Kelly’s good play carried into the second half also, finishing the game with 13 points. Justice Sueing played better in the second half, going from 4 points at the half to finishing the game with 11 points and 6 rebounds. The game got ugly towards the middle of the second half, but Cal held it together to pull out the win.
