The former walk-on gets rewarded.

Senior guard Nick Hamilton joined the Cal men’s basketball program in 2014 as a walk-on and played a total of ten minutes in his freshman season. Fast forward to 2018, and head coach Wyking Jones has rewarded Hamilton’s perseverance with an athletic scholarship. Here’s a clip from Cal Athletics:

The former Westchester High standout left Los Angeles after graduation despite gaining acceptance to nearby UCLA. Hamilton’s academic achievements paved the way for his admission to Cal. According to Hamilton: “I chose Berkeley because it would be a new experience.”

Coming into this season, Jones made no secret that he planned to make Hamilton a fixture in the rotation. So far this campaign, Hamilton has averaged 14 minutes per game while racking up 44 points, 36 rebounds, 15 assists, and 6 steals.

Jabari Bird and former head coach Ben Braun were among those who congratulated Hamilton on his new scholarship via Twitter. It’s great to see the Cal community recognize Hamilton’s contributions to the program.
