Congrats to California Golden Bears sophomore Abbey Weitzeil for qualifying for the World Championships this summer! Weitzeil finished with a time of 24.74 seconds in the 50 free, just edging out Lia Neal. Simone Manuel won the 50 free.

Weitzeil has already won two Olympic medals (silver in the 4x100 free relay, gold in the 4x100 medley relay for racing in the heats). It looks like she’ll have a chance to add to her total at Worlds in a few weeks time.

Joining Weitzeil on the U.S. at Worlds is junior Kathleen Baker, who captured both the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and was second in the 50 back at nationals. Baker, who set a U.S. Open record in the 100 back, claimed silver in the event at the Olympics in Rio, while she was a member of the gold-medal-winning 400 medley relay. Weitzeil picked up silver for her role on the 400 free relay and gold on the medley relay.

The World Championships for swimming will be held July 23-30 in Budapest.
