Drafted 56th overall in the second round doesn’t necessarily breed high expectations, but Jabari Bird seems determined to prove otherwise. Although Bird’s summer league performance started slow, with him posting only 3 points and 3 rebounds in a little over 13 minutes off the bench, his performance against the Warriors on July 13th revealed to the world the player Cal fans knew and loved.
Bird was dominant against the Warriors as a starter, scoring 17 points in under 20 minutes. He shot 80% from the floor and 50% from beyond the arc. But this is all something his former Cal teammate and current Celtics teammate Jaylen Brown knew.
Brown told the Boston Globe that he is "not surprised by Bird's recent success," and went on to say, “Jabari is a steal [in the draft],” said Brown, Bird’s teammate at Cal. “I told the guys that when they worked him out.” Here are some highlights from Bird’s time in the summer league so far, including a flattering comparison to Larry Bird by ESPN.
