Not a whole lot to share today... but I’m also not feeling too well, so if I missed something please share in the comments!
By the time this article is published, but not before I have to leave to do stuff, we should know about Layshia Clarendon’s WNBA All-Star game fate. This will be announced around 9am Pacific. I will hopefully be able to update it later, or someone will have another article for it.
NBA Summer League
- I looked at this roster three times, and I kept missing Cal alums each time... but here goes: Ivan Rabb (although currently out with an injury), Jabari Bird, Jaylen Brown, Jorge Gutierrez, Tyrone Wallace, Richard Solomon and (if you count him... and I do) Jordan Mathews are currently on Summer League squads.
- Jaylen Brown is paying $5000 of his own money to host an event in Las Vegas for young players under the age of 21 (and thus unable to do a lot of fun stuff Vegas is known for). The event was last night at an undisclosed location. Notable attendees included No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz.
“There are a lot of young guys here, and there is nothing to do in Vegas if you’re under 21,” the 20-year-old Brown told The Undefeated. “I just want to do something. Hang out, talk to them. Build relationships. I’m not 21. [Celtics teammate] Jayson [Tatum] is not 20. A lot of the draft picks are young.
“I’m going to let them bring whoever they want. Food is on me. Everything.”
Football
- Raymond Davison is a nominee for 2017 AllState AFCA Good Works Team®. AFCA stands for the American Football Coaches Association. He is one of 146 nominees from across the entire NCAA (FBS, FCS, DII, DIII) and NAIA college football spectrum. Considered one of the highest off-the-field honors a college football player will receive, the team will consist of players that give the most back to their communities. Check the article to see why Davison is considered a nominee, but here’s a quote from him on the nomination.
"Being nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® is an incredible honor to me," Davison said. "Football is about more than making tackles on Saturday. It's about giving back to the same community that supports you, whether that is imparting wisdom on the youth, feeding the homeless, or helping adults who can't help themselves."
- Rivals/Golden Bear Report’s “Bear Essentials” series continues with a look at Tony Mekari.
