It is hot today in the American Southwest.

Forecast calls for 120 degrees in Phoenix. American Airlines has announced more than 40 flights operated by regional jets are canceled due to high temperatures. That's insane.

In Death Valley, there’s such a thing as heat tourists. As interviewed on NPR, Abby Wines, a management assistant in Death Valley National Park, says in July and August they usually get between 100,000 and 110,000 people. Most visitors in the summer are from other countries, she says. "So imagine living in Northern Europe. You want to take a vacation to visit some place to experience something different from what you experience at home. And the Southwest of the United States is very different from Germany, and Death Valley is the most extreme place there."

I’ve never experienced such heat, nor am I likely to be a heat tourist. Having lived in Austin, I’d say I’ve served my time. Here’s the only way I survived a Texas summer (Barton Springs Pool):
