Cal’s quarterback picture got a little clearer today when redshirt freshman quarterback Max Gilliam announced via Twitter that he has been granted an unconditional release and will transfer.

With the recent addition of transfer QB Brandon McIlwain and what appears to be a two-man race between Ross Bowers and Chase Forrest for the starting QB job this fall, Gilliam will head elsewhere to continue his career. Cal still has one redshirt freshman quarterback remaining from Gilliam’s class in Victor Viramontes.
His transfer leaves Cal with four scholarship QB’s on the roster, so Coach Wilcox and Co will almost certainly be looking at adding two quarterbacks this recruiting cycle. McIlwain likely counts for one, so who will the Bears target recruiting-wise? With Adrian Martinez on his way to Tennessee, a slot is open for the Bears.
Thanks to Max for his time in Berkeley and best of luck wherever he lands! Go Bears!
