The California Golden Bears and St Mary’s Gaels are the two top programs in the East Bay basketball scene. They will duel each other on the basketball court three times in three years.

Cal will play St. Mary’s in December of 2017 at Haas Pavilion. They will then play each other again during the 2018-19 season in Moraga at McKeon Pavilion, before returning to Berkeley in 2020.

Cal will thus get to play four games in five years against their top rivals, with three of those matchups at home. Cal played St. Mary’s during the 2015-16 season, with the Bears edging out the Gaels 63-59.

Cal basketball’s 2017 non-conference schedule still has plenty of openings. The other major contest that has been announced at this point will be the Maui Invitational, where Cal will battle at least three of Chaminade, LSU, Marquette, Michigan, Notre Dame, VCU and Wichita State. No other major contests have been announced at this point.

Here’s the quote from Cal Athletics:

“Saint Mary’s is a high-quality opponent who will offer a great preseason test for us, and we’re excited to be able to do that right here in the East Bay and in front of so many of our alumni and fans,” said California head coach Wyking Jones. “We’re looking forward to showcasing a pair of competitive teams with strong basketball traditions over the next few years.”
