Cal elevates Tim O’Toole to associate head coach

Go Bears!

The California Golden Bears have permenantly retained Tim O’Toole, and have now made him the lead assistant on Wyking Jones’s first coaching staff.

I think we can safely presume Tracy Webster (Cuonzo Martin’s associate head coach) is now headed elsewhere. That will leave Cal with two assistant coaching hires left to make to round out the staff.

O'Toole has previously served as the head coach of Fairfield from 1998 to 2006, posting a record of 112-121. O'Toole then served as an assistant at Syracuse, Duke and Stanford. O’Toole spent his last three seasons across the Bay Area with the Cardinal under Johnny Dawkins, where Stanford captured a prestigious second NIT championship, but they also did make a Sweet 16 run. O'Toole was an assistant with the Orange in the early 90s and was with the Blue Devils in the late 90s.

O’Toole’s primary responsibility was coaching the bigs last season, where he helped develop Kingsley Okoroh into one of the nation’s premier shot blockers.

Release from Cal Athletics!

California assistant men’s basketball coach Tim O’Toole has been elevated to associate head coach, Wyking Jones announced Wednesday.

O’Toole, who boasts more than two decades of collegiate coaching experience, joined the Golden Bears in April 2016 under former head coach Cuonzo Martin and was a key assistant on the 2016-17 staff that guided Cal in developing as the Pac-12’s best field goal defense and top scoring defense.

“I am very excited to have Tim O’Toole as my associate head coach. To be able to continue this journey with him means a lot to both me and this program,” Jones said. “His passion and energy for the game is second to none. His knowledge of the game, experience and attention to detail is what makes him special.”

In his capacity as associate head coach, O’Toole will be heavily involved in scouting and recruiting and will continue his role in overseeing the development of Cal’s frontcourt.
