Football Articles

  • The SF Chronicle puts the spotlight on Jordan Veasy before he takes the field for the final time in Berkeley.

Growing up in Gadsden, Ala., he understood that football was a religion to many, but he was a cleanup-hitting shortstop who thought his future was in baseball.

When he had rocketed up from just under 5-foot-10 to 6-2 before his senior year, however, he started thinking that those who had left the tiny town triangulated by Atlanta, Birmingham and Chattanooga to succeed in the NFL might have been showing him the path.

“My dad is 6-4, so I knew it was just a matter of time,” Veasy said. “I’m just a late bloomer. That’s been true of a lot of stuff. That’s why I don’t feel like I’m an older football player. There are a lot of things that I’m just now growing into.

“I feel like my ceiling is very high. I’ve yet to play my best football. I’m really eager to focus and see just how good I can be.”

Veasy will be joined by his mother and sisters at Senior Day, but his father is staying home to attend his little brothers’ youth football championships. Veasy understands; he thinks football is his future, too.

He’ll get a chance to play in the NFL. His chiseled build and innate ability were made for it, but he’s already thinking about life after playing.
