Cal Football Recruiting, Friday Night Lights: Future Bears in the Playoffs

New, 3 comments

It’s win or go home for the majority of Cal commits as the playoffs have arrived.

NCAA Football: California at Colorado Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Nikko Remigio: WR, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)

Mater Dei viciously eliminated Vista Murrieta from the playoffs 49-7 in a first-round matchup between the two to improve to 11-0 this season. Once again, it looks like Remigio was injured and missed out on playing in this one. Next up for Mater Dei is a second round showdown with Long Beach Poly.

JT Shrout: QB, Hart (Newhall, CA)

Hart extended its winning streak to five games after defeating Sierra Canyon 21-7 to improve to 8-3 this season. Shrout completed 13 of 21 passes for 168 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Their second round playoff matchup is with Rancho Verde.

Will Craig (OL) and Evan Tattersall (LB/RB): Granite Bay (Granite Bay, CA)

Granite Bay improved to 9-2 after winning its fifth consecutive game to advance to the second round of the playoffs by defeating Burbank 42-20. Evan Tattersall rushed three times for 12 yards and one touchdown. He also recorded three tackles. Granite Bay’s next opponent is Antelope.

Chigozie Anusiem: CB, Sonora (La Habra, CA)

Sonora’s season came to a close after a 44-2 playoff loss to Saugus in the first round. Sonora finished the season with a 6-5 record.

Nick Alftin: DE, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, CA)

Archbishop Mitty slumped to its fifth consecutive loss with a 35-25 regular season loss to Sacred Heart Prep. Archbishop Mitty is now 5-5 heading into their first round playoff game against Serra. Alftin recorded three tackles and four quarterback pressures.

Atonio Mafi: G/DT, Junipero Serra (San Mateo, CA)

Serra extended its winning streak to seven games by defeating St. Francis 31-21 to end the regular season 8-2. Their first playoff opponent is Archbishop Mitty.

Miles Owens: OL, Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland, CA)

Bishop O’Dowd extended its winning streak to five with a resounding 49-7 victory over Terra Linda to finish the regular season 8-2. Their first round playoff opponent is Acalanes.

Brandon Mello: OL, Clayton Valley Charter (Concord, CA)

Clayton Valley Charter was on a bye this past week, but they will take on De La Salle in their first playoff game.

JH Tevis: DE, Menlo (Atherton, CA)

Menlo lost its regular season finale 42-27 to Sequoia to fall to 6-4 on the year. Tevis tallied three tackles, one tackle for a loss, four quarterback hurries, and one pass deflection. Menlo will take on Jefferson in its first playoff game.

Jasper Friis: OL, Aquinas (San Bernardino, CA)

Aquinas continued its dominant season with a 44-3 victory against Maranatha in its first round playoff game. Next up for Aquinas is a matchup with Moreno Valley.

Matthew Cindric: DL, Skyline (Sammamish, WA)

Cindric and Skyline squeaked past Bothell 31-28 in a first round playoff game. Cindric recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown towards the end of the first half. Here’s what his coach had to say about him via The Seattle Times:

“We have a fantastic team, but (Cindric) is our leader, and he’s our team,” Skyline coach Mat Taylor said. “We’ve had games where he was injured twice and our team was looking around, and he’s so important to us. To have that touchdown (at the end of the first half), it was unbelievable.

“That was the whole game right there. That was amazing.”

Slater Zellers: OL/LS, Notre Dame Prep (Scottsdale, AZ)

It’s been almost two months since Notre Dame Prep was in a close contest, but the unfamiliarity couldn’t keep Zellers and his teammates from navigating the uncharted waters and steering the ship into the next round of the playoffs. They managed to escape a second round playoff meeting against Queen Creek with a 34-31 overtime victory. They’ll take on Cienega in the third round.
