Is anyone tired of hearing about honors and recognition for the California Golden Bears’ defense?
In a sense, the whole unit is being recognized as Athlon Sports has named Tim DeRuyter as the Defensive Coordinator of the Week following our victory over the Washington State Cougars.
Under the direction of DeRuyter and head coach Justin Wilcox, California’s defense has made significant strides this year. And this unit was instrumental in the upset win over Washington State on Saturday night, as the Golden Bears limited Mike Leach’s offense to just three points and 4.6 yards per play. Additionally, California collected nine sacks, 12 tackles for a loss and forced seven turnovers in the 37–3 victory.
Cal held a feared Wazzu offense averaging 39.7 points per game to less than 10% of that figure. And all this just one year removed from a historically bad defense for the Golden Bears.
Let’s hope there’s some truth to the saying “defense wins championships”.
