Would there be any bigger change in styles in one off-season?
Going from the Bear Raid to the Triple Option.
The hire in question is current Navy HC Ken Niumatalolo.
Let’s see what the Midshipmen coach would bring to Berkeley.
- Can we afford him?
Wikipedia lists his annual salary at $1.6 Million. Sonny made an average salary of $2.8 Million after his extension last season. So yes, he would be affordable.
- Does he have coaching experience?
Coach Niumatalolo became the HC at Annapolis in 2007. Prior to that he was the Navy RB Coach in 96-96, the OC from 97-98, the TE/ST coach at UNLV from 99-01, and returned to Navy in 2002 as the Associate HC and OL coach.
- Does he have winning experience?
He took over as the HC after the 2007 regular season was over and started with the bowl game that season, which he lost 35-32 to Utah. Starting from the 2008 to 2016, Niumatalolo’s midshipmen posted atleast 8 wins in every season other than 2011. In terms of bowl games, his record for the post season was 4 wins and 5 losses. It’s clear that he’s able to produce winning teams despite the recruiting restrictions that are around him.
- Can he recruit and develop talent?
He runs a triple option at Annapolis which has won him quite a good string of games. This past season he beat #6 Houston and also Notre Dame. In 2015, he nearly produced a Heisman trophy winner with QB Keenan Reynolds firmly in the hunt until the last few weeks of the season.
So what do you think Bears fans? Is Ken Niumatalolo the right candidate to lead the Bears program?
