Cal Football Recruiting: Friday Night Lights Week Two

Cal’s football commits hit the field again for week two of their high school football season with the hope of building on their first performances. Who shined brightest under the lights?

California v Arizona

Week two of high school football kicked off this weekend and all but one of Cal’s current commits was in action, with Biaggio Ali-Walsh the lone exception as he missed out due to an injury. Let’s get straight into the performances!

Taariq Johnson & Jeremiah Hawkins: WR & ATH, Buena Park Coyotes (Buena Park, CA)

Coming off the heels of a dominating first win of the season the Coyotes kept the ball rolling with a 21-0 win against the Paramount Pirates. Hawkins rushed five times for 108 yards and one touchdown to go along with five catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson contributed five catches for 67 yards.

Hawkins takes a screen pass to the house after the convoy sets up in front of him but he still outruns an angle on a defender in the secondary. On the second touchdown in the highlight reel he takes a direct snap all the way to the endzone by outrunning another angle.

Chase Garbers: QB, Corona del Mar Sea Kings (Newport Beach, CA)

Garbers and the Sea Kings rebounded from a rough week one loss to notch a much-needed road win against the Los Gatos Wildcats by a score of 31-13. Garbers completed 18 of 23 passes for 190 yards and one rushing touchdown.

Michael Onyemaobi: ATH, Chaparral Pumas (Temecula, CA)

The Pumas desperately needed a victory in week two as they suffered a demoralizing defeat in week one. Behind Onyemaobi’s 145 yards on just nine touches (31 rushing, 114 receiving) Chaparral took down the Poly Bears 21-19 to notch their first victory of the season.

Gabe Cherry: DE, Centennial Golden Hawks (Bakersfield, CA)

Cherry notched just one tackle and two hurries as the Golden Hawks took another massive loss. This time it was a 44-7 loss to the Clovis West Golden Eagles. Centennial hasn’t been able to get going on either side of the ball through two games now and surely must go back to the drawing board to figure out a way to turn their season around in a hurry.

Je’Quari Godfrey: CB, Bishop O’Dowd Dragons (Oakland, CA)

Godfrey and the Dragons opened their season with a dominating 58-7 victory against the Tamalpais Red Tailed Hawks.

Biaggio Ali-Walsh: RB, Bishop Gorman Gaels (Las Vegas, NV)

Walsh missed out on Bishop Gorman’s thumping victory against Florida’s Cocoa due to a right ankle injury, but the Gaels won big anyways 46-10. The Gaels appear to be an unstoppable force and they’ll take on St. John Bosco next week with Walsh expected to play.

Alex Funches & Da’Quan Patton: DE & LB, Trinity Valley C.C. (Athens, TX)

Trinity Valley C.C. took down Navarro College 46-41 to start their season 2-0. Patton and Funches each racked up 10 tackles with Patton notching one sack to Funches’ two. The duo combined for six QB hurries as well.

This is the second straight week in which Funches has one defensive player of the week for Trinity Valley as he shared the honor with Patton for their week one victory.

That’s a wrap for week two of Friday Night Lights, check back next week to see how our recruits perform in week three.
