Cal Football Practice Notebook #9: Jordan Veasy, Vic Wharton, Traveon Beck incoming

NCAA Football: Arizona State at California Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Key takeaways:

  1. Jordan Veasy and Vic Wharton are new guys who could see some quality time this year. Wharton’s a burner who is starting to improve his game through his hands and crisp route-running. Veasy was thought to be more of a possession receiver, but is starting to show some speed that could turn him into a useful slot receiver.
  2. Offensive line is looking really good. Patrick Mekari and Semisi Uluave are some of the backups who stood out today, looking really good in blocking drills. They will be well-equipped to survive even if Aaron Cochran isn’t ready to go against Hawaii.
  3. Traveon Beck has a bright future. Beck has been a PBU- and interception-machine and has definitely caught the attention of the coaches. Do not be surprised if he is part of the cornerback rotation this year.
  4. Chad Hansen could have a special year this year. Combining speed and crisp route-running, Hansen could very well break out as the most experienced of the bunch and be a true number-one wideout.
