DE Alex Funches commits to Cal!

Cal gets an under-the-radar edge rusher to bolster its depth in the trenches. How will he fit into the Cal defense?

Jennifer Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

After being hosted by fellow defensive lineman James Looney and recruited by defensive line coach Fred Tate, Alex Funches decided to pledge his talents to the Bears.

A JuCO player out of Trinity Valley Community College, Funches was also swayed by teammate and now fellow Cal Commit Da'Quan Patton.

At 6-3, Funches has long arms and would figure to contribute as a pass rusher, as his length and speed allows him to both swat down balls and protect the flats. His tape shows him exploding off the line to get to the quarterback or shed blocks and tackle the running back.

It is hard to find much on Funches, as none of the primary recruiting websites have rankings on him, but his commitment to Cal figures to get him more in the spotlight. One thing is certain though, if he wants to make a major impact at Cal he will have to get bigger, as he has a lankier frame at 225 pounds. He has one more year at Trinity Valley to hit the weight room, which will hopefully lead to him getting heavier, but it'll be extremely difficult to face Pac-12 lineman unless he gets stronger. Funches has some interesting raw talent and hopefully some college-level weight training and a hard work-ethic will allow him to see time on the field.

Nonetheless, you can never have enough talent in the trenches, and this is very much a welcome addition to a recruiting class that is shaping up well!
