Cal football recruiting: Auburn commit and five star RB Malcolm Askew to visit Berkeley

The talented and explosive four-star athlete will give Cal an official visit. Can Cal pry him away from the SEC?

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Current Auburn commit Malcolm Askew has Cal in his top 10 and will give Berkeley an official visit despite his pledge to the Tigers. Although it seems that Askew is firmly committed to Auburn, he is open to hearing recruiting pitches from the five teams he will give an official visit to. These teams include: Oklahoma, TCU, Miami, Cal and Auburn. All the teams on his list have one obvious thing in common: a high-octane offense. Cal has an uphill battle to fight for Askew's services, and it is more-than-likely he will remain with Auburn, especially given the fact that Auburn is currently telling him to help recruit other talented players, but it is definitely worth a shot given Askew's athleticism.

A four-star athlete out of Alabama, Askew runs a 4.46 40-yard dash and is a two-sport varsity athlete who also plays shooting guard for his high school, McAdory High School. Cal loaded up its 2016 class with speedy playmakers such as Demetris Robertson, Melquise Stovall, and Zion Echols, so Askew could help bolster the wide receiving core at Cal, and deepen the depth of home-run hitters in open space.

Askew shows very good vision and lateral quickness on the field, which is why Rivals has him as the number 159 recruit in the nation. While he will have tougher competition no matter where he chooses to attend college, his game definitely translates to the next level.

It will take a mind-blowing official visit to change Askew's mind, but he would be a huge addition to a class that is already shaping up to be good. Let's hope Peeler and Spavital can work some magic and flip Askew to Cal.
