The Golden Bears have snapped the 5 year Washington winning streak and won the program's 17th IRA national championship with the Varsity 8 victory earlier today. This is the first Cal men's crew national title since 2010. Check out the replay of this race in the video feed below (it's easy to find as the first race of the day).

You can see that the times are across the board slower due to the condition. Nonetheless, the Golden Bears showed that their best time through the prelim heat and semifinals were not a fluke.
The winning Cal boat consists of Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk, Martin Mackovic,Maarten Hurkmans, Joachim Sutton, Niki VanSprang, Ferdi Querfeld, Morgan Hellen, Alex Wallis and coxswain Julian Venonsky. This same group was able to defeat Washington and Stanford in regular season races and at the Pac-12 Championships for the conference title clinching victory.
Bears also placed 2nd in the Freshman 8, 3rd in 2V8 and V4, and 5th in 3V8.
At the end of the day, the Bears won the Ten Eyck Memorial Trophy for the top team by overall points. Bears snap a 9 year Washington dominance of this award. This is only the 2nd time in history that the Bears have won this trophy (the other time was 2006).
ROW ON YOU BEARS!
After two days of racing, all Cal Men's Crew boats will be racing for national championships on Sunday morning. Of course, the big one AKA THE national championship race will be the Varsity 8 Grand Final.
Bears' V8 boat again has the top overall time on Saturday. Bears' 5.29.880 is better than Yale's 5.31.820 (granted that's a separate race and condition). The 6 schools that will race for the IRA national championship are:
Harvard, Princeton, Yale, California, Washington, and Brown.
It should be a good race. Last year, the top ranked Yale Bulldogs missed out on the grand final with a bad Saturday, that's not the case this year. The Golden Bears will look to avenge the loss to Yale in San Diego as well as upend the 5 year winning streak of Washington today.
You can watch today's finals action via the YouTube stream below:
All the other Cal boats also made their respective grand finals.
