Cal Bears at USA Swimming Olympic Trail Day 2 Recap and Day 3 Preview

New, 6 comments

Dana Vollmer became the first USA Swimming Calympians, who will join her today? It is possibly for all 4 100 Back Olympians to be Golden Bears.

Natalie Coughlin has a shot to make the Rio 2016 games today by placing top 2 in the women's 100 Back final alongside 3 other Golden Bears (including one Missy Franklin).

Day 2 Recap:

Cal women's swimming alum Dana Vollmer became a 3-time Calympian by finishing 2nd in the Women's 100 Fly on Monday night.

Unfortunately, she's the lone Cal swimmer to secure a spot on the U.S. Swimming team. Josh Prenot fell a fraction of a second short of making his first Olympics by placing 3rd in the men's 100 Breast. Prenot's better event, 200 Breast, is coming up later on the week.

Former Cal Bears (and recent Wisconsin commit as a transfer) Cierra Runge also just missed out on becoming a Calympian by placing 3rd in the women's 400 Free.

Making it to the finals tomorrow, 4 Golden Bears - sophomores Kathleen Baker and Amy Bilquist along with vets Missy Franklin and Natalie Coughlin are going to race in the women's 100 Back on Tuesday night. Both Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pebley have also made the men's 100 Back on Tuesday night as well.

Day 3 Events:

Women's 200m Free - Semifinal
Men's 200m Free - Final
Women's 100m Back - Final
Men's 100m Back - Final
Women's 100m Breast - Final
Men's 200m Fly - Semifinal
Women's 200m IM -- Semifinal

For all of today's finals with the exception of Men's 200 Free where no Cal affiliate is in the finals, only the top 2 swimmers will make the U.S. Olympic team.

Women's 200m Free - Semifinal

SwimSwam preview of this event.

Top 6 finishers in this event makes the Olympic squad.

Three recent Cal graduates in Rachael Acker, Melanie Klaren, and Elizabeth Pelton will represent the Golden Bears in this event on Tuesday. Cierra Runge and Katie McLaughlin are also swimming in this event. In the mix as well (with perhaps the best chance to make the team) is one Missy Franklin.

Men's 200m Free - Final

No Golden Bears made the final of this event.

Conor Dwyer is the top seed going to the final. Ryan Lochte has also made the final.

Women's 100m Back - Final

Half of the women's 100 Back field are Golden Bears. Sophomore Kathleen Baker managed to get the 2nd best time in the semifinals. She is joined by Amy Bilquist (3rd best semifinal time), Missy Franklin (7th) and Natalie Coughlin (8th) to race for the two spots on the U.S. Olympic swim team. Georgia's Olivia Smoliga has had the top time in both the prelim and the semifinal.

In 2012, the two spots were taken by Missy Franklin and Rachel Boostma. Boostma just missed out on advancing to the semifinals on Monday morning.

Men's 100m Back - Final

Two more Golden Bears will be in the mix for Olympic berth in the men's 100 Back. Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pelbey had the 2nd and 4th best semifinal times. David Plummer had the top time in the semifinals while veteran Matt Grevers finished 3rd. It would not be shocking for Murphy and Pebley to go 1 and 2 in the final on Tuesday night.

Women's 100m Breast - Final

Jessica Hardy earns a spot in the 100 Breast final with the 4th best semifinal time on Monday night. The Cal graduate (who is training at USC) is looking for her 2nd Olympics berth.

Men's 200m Fly - Semifinal

SwimSwam preview of this event.

Cal alum Tom Shields and Cal sophomore Andrew Seliskar are expected to make the 200 Fly final. Both of these guys are trying to become a Calympian for the first time.

Also in the mix with the Cal connections are Adam Hinshaw, Justin Lynch, and Michael Thomas.

A big name making a return to this event is this Baltimorian named Michael Phelps...I think he's sort of famous for some reason.

Women's 200m IM -- Semifinal

SwimSwam preview of this event.

Cal sophomore Kathleen Baker is a notable scratch for the 200 IM event. Baker will concentrate on the 100 Back final instead. SwimSwam preview above actually thinks that Baker can make the final of this event.

The favorite in the women's 200 IM is Calympian Caitlin Leverenz. Leverenz earned a bronze medal in this event in London in 2012. She finished 5th in the 400 IM, but is much stronger in the 200 IM. This is her best shot make the Rio U.S. squad.

Cal alum Maija Roses and Celina Li will also race in the prelim of this event on Tuesday morning.

Best of luck to all of the Golden Bears racing today.

GO BEARS!
