Davis Webb joined Cal football thanks in part to Jake Spavital, familiarity with Bear Raid

Go Bears!

Bruce Feldman spoke with new Cal quarterback Davis Webb to learn more about the reasons for the Texas Tech graduate transfer choosing the Bears. There are two big factors that seem to involve Webb changing away from his original Colorado commitment and deciding on the Bears instead.

  • One is the influence of having Cal offensive coordinator Jake Spavital. Spavital is Air Raid through and through and there shouldn't be too much disruption from one system to the next.
  • The Bear Raid offense isn't changing too much from one offensive coordinator to the next. The system that Spavital has run most of his career is very similar to the one Webb used at Texas Tech.
"My goal at Texas Tech when I went there was to be the best teammate I possibly can be, and that's what I want to do here. I really want to get to know as many of them (in the next few weeks) as I can and embrace the culture here that Coach (Sonny) Dykes has created."
Add that in with all the cross-connections between Texas Tech and Sonny Dykes (A bunch of Red Raider assistants like Sonny Cumbie and Neal Brown apparently consulted Webb on his decision), and it made things much easier.

With summer bridge about to start up, Webb has made his move to campus and started preparing to take classes to get a UC Berkeley Masters in Public Health.

Cal fans, your thoughts on where Webb factors into the quarterback competition? Would you consider Webb the favorite based on all these additional factors?
