A bad 5th inning dooms the Golden Bears in the rubber game against Oregon on Sunday afternoon. Leading 2-1 heading to B5, Matt Ladrech was chased and the Ducks scored 6 runs to pull ahead 7-2. After the Bears cut the lead to 2 in T6 by making it 7-5, Ducks answered with 4 more run for the final margin - an 11-5 Oregon victory.

CalBears.com recap:

The No. 11 Golden Bears (19-9, 8-4 Pac-12) fell to the Oregon Ducks (14-12, 4-5 Pac-12) 11-5 on Sunday afternoon at PK Park in Eugene to drop two out of three in the series. Oregon benefitted from two big innings, scoring a six-spot in the bottom of the fifth and tacking on four more in the sixth to beat the Bears for the second straight day. Cal fought back in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-5, but were unable to get over the hump. Offensively, senior designated hitter Devin Pearson was on base all five times, with a two-run triple, a walk, and he was also hit three times. Senior third baseman Mitchell Kranson also drove in a pair, as had a two-run double in the sixth.

“We just need to do the little things right,” Pearson said following the series loss. “We’ve got to score with runners in scoring position, we’ve got to pitch better and play better defense. That said, we have so much fight in us; it’s unbelievable. We never think we are out of a game. I think this all started at Texas, and from then on, we’ve always been throwing punches ever since. That’s something that’s good about our team; we just need to take care of the little things. If we do our jobs, we will win games.”

Bears will next take on Cal Poly down in SLO on Tuesday before a road trip to Arizona State next weekend.

Probable Pitching Matchup: LHP Matt Ladrech (3-1, 3.18 ERA) vs. LHP David Peterson (2-2, 1.42 ERA)

Friday Result: Cal 12, Oregon 2

Saturday Result: Cal 3, Oregon 4

Bears face yet another Oregon lefty in David Peterson today, who has missed some time due to injury, in this deciding rubber game of the three game series. Golden Bears will counter with a lefty of their own in sophomore Matt Ladrech.

Saturday's loss snaps a string of 7 consecutive Pac-12 wins for the Bears. In this 2nd road conference series of the season, the Golden Bears are still looking for their first Pac-12 road series win of the year. In the conference opening series at USC, Bears won game 1 before a heartbreaking game 2 loss and a Trojan rout in game 3.

Despite the loss, the Bears still sit at the top of the Pac-12 standings (although few schools have played one less series). Note: this standings is not entirely accurate as it has counted the Saturday loss for the Bears but not for the Ducks.
