Sonny Dykes confirmed the return of Zach Kline to the California Golden Bears football roster. Kline is walking on with the team this spring and compete for the opening quarterback position.
Kline transferred from Cal the year after losing the starting quarterback battle with Jared Goff. He spent one season at Butte College (with Damariay Drew, who returned to Cal last season), and another year at Indiana State, so he has at least one season of college eligibility left. It remains to be seen if Kline will be with the team this fall. His original plan at Cal is to get his degree before making a graduate transfer, but it remains to be seen if this is what he'll do.
Since Kline's 8 is taken by Luke Rubenzer, he'll be wearing #17.
I said, 'I want to make sure we manage expectations,' for him and for everybody," Dykes said. "Zach's a great kid, a very hard-working kid, a popular rkid. I met with him, I asked him to meet with Damon Harrington, because he has a real good feel for what's going on with the team, and he met with Damon and then Damon gave me the OK. At that point, I said, 'Yeah, I'd love to have you back.' He'll go through spring ball, and we'll see what happens."
Welcome back Zach! Go Bears!
Sonny will be talking more about the quarterback competition today, we'll have more notes on this as the day goes along.
