Tevin Paul signs with Cal, faxes in letter of intent

Sonny Dykes and the rest of the coaching staff dipped into the great football state of Texas for some defensive line help in the form of Tevin Paul.

Tevin Paul's recruiting rankings are not going to wow anyone, but after watching a lot of his tape while writing the Friday Night Lights series for CGB I came away impressed. I think Paul is an under-the-radar defensive lineman who will play a decent role in the defensive front rotation as his career progresses.

Paul played high school football for Austin (Tx.) powerhouse Lake Travis, who lost in the 6A State Championship game this season, so he has played against great competition throughout his career.

Here is where Paul ranks with the major recruiting services:

ESPN: 3 stars, 96th ranked defensive tackle, 185th ranked player in Texas.

Scout: 3 stars, 67th ranked defensive end.

Rivals: 2 stars.

247sports: 3 stars, 107th ranked defensive tackle, 234th ranked player in Texas.

As I said before, he is not ranked very highly, but we've had success with under-the-radar players in Texas before (e.g., Justin Forsett).

Cal had to overcome Northwestern as the primary competitors for Paul's commitment, so take that Pat Fitzgerald!

Welcome to Cal, Tevin!
